It is located on the neck of the lamp, beneath the shade.

Why are these so expensive???

This is NOT expensive. It's actually a good price for a quality lamp. Shop around; you'll see. Very happy with my purchase.

I would want to replace the single switch to a three way. What criteria do I need to know regarding the lamp shade for heat concern?

Any modifications or alterations made will void the warranty and returns will not be accepted. This is only offered as described with an on/off switch. Try an add-on table top dimmer which works just as good.

What type of wood and color is this?

I don't know the type of wood, but the color is a medium brown. It is real wood, though, not some sort of alternative or composite. It's a lovely lamp.
