Pros and cons
I like the phone all together, but if your playing high speed games it likes to freeze. If you get it and it keeps saying you don't have cell phone signal when you know you have it. Then just turn off the phone and turn it back on and it will work. I used it with my old sim card from another android phone and it worked. I don't know if you can change to a different service after that and it work or not. You might be able to use straight talk one month and then change to Verizon. I don't know; but the first service you put on the phone is what you might have to always use. Everyday use stuff like listening to music, Facebook, Google; and other things people might do everyday is alright. It's just a everyday use phone nothing special. The graphics are in the older style that I like. Something to think about it's used for the simple things in life not all the big movie streaming and stuff people do now. It's a great budget phone and durable. I weld 12 hours a day ;and it plays music all day. Without going dead or messing up. I like that it's cheap so if you mess it up. Then you can just buy a new one without busting the bank. Just think about what you want! Cheap and reliable or expensive and constantly worried about messing it up; or breaking the bank to get a new one. If you want simple and easy this is it. I think it's one of the best cheapest phones you can buy.

A great choice for under $200!
I recently purchased this TCL 40 X 5G Unlocked Phone and I must say, it's quite impressive. The 6.56-inch HD+ display is vibrant and sharp, making videos and games look stunning. The 5G connection is lightning-fast, and I can stream high-quality content without any buffering. I used to use a Samsung A53 cell phone, and on the recommendation of a friend, I bought this one from TCL. This phone meets my needs perfectly and is a great choice for under $200! The 5000mAh battery is a game-changer. I use my phone extensively throughout the day, and this battery easily lasts from morning to night with plenty to spare. It's such a relief not to worry about constantly charging my phone. The 50MP main camera delivers some excellent shots. Whether I'm taking photos in broad daylight or low light conditions, the quality is consistently good. The Android 13 system is smooth and responsive, and it comes with some useful features and customization options. The 4GB RAM and 64GB ROM storage provide ample space for apps, photos, and videos, but I would have appreciated more RAM for even smoother multitasking. Overall, this is a fantastic 5G phone with great features, and the price is reasonable for what you get. I highly recommend it.

2022 phone with a few issues, but is still a good phone.
So I purchased my phone about two months ago. I am not a very tech savvy individual but I still understand operating systems and quality. As a smart phone it's fairly quick in regards to processing speeds, downloading speeds, and operating system. The screen is very clear and vivid. The weight of the phone is very light which feels very comfortable in your hand. It comes with the fastest charging block I've had in my life. The block will charge this phone from 0% to 100% in 20-30 minutes, however, hooking any other block up to this phone and it will take you hours to fully charge. So I'm not usually some one who writes reviews let alone go into details in the reviews. I truly like this phone I wish it doesn't have the issues it currently has, so I felt sharing with others my technical issues it might assist others in their choice. In the first month of having the phone it would randomly mostly at night make a quiet but noticable static noise. Most of the time if I would connect the charger to the phone when it was doing that it would almost immediately stop. I honestly thought there was something wrong with the battery and it was going to explode, but instead of making waves over the infrequent noise and sending it back, I decided to keep it. Now 1 month after all the static sounds and it has completely stopped. However, now I have zero sound from my speaker. I can call and text and can clearly hear and be heard, but any music a play or videos it's a whisper at full volume. Which is absolutely annoying when you're not a fan of head phones and enjoy sharing obnoxious music with your friends and family. Lastly, just like a lot of the phones on here specifically TCL branded phones it's extremely difficult to find a cell phone case that actually protects your phone. The closest I found for protection was the flimsy or "light weight" silicone case that cheap companies disperse with focus on the designs/colors but not so much durability. If I still had the option I would return this phone and find something else. As I said in the beginning I love this phone, it has worked well, and the issues I've had could be a lot worse. It still doesn't change the fact that it's been having issues every month I've had it and I really don't see it lastly for a full year tbh. I hope this helps others in there choices.

No more dropped calls! AMAZING reception.
Cons, The screen is not pure inky black and has poor side viewing. The cameras are not world class. Feels sluggish at times. You need high sensitivity, low impedance headphones to get the most out of the 3.5mm headphone jack PROs The screen gets BRIGHT, and when looking at the phone head on, it is vivid and clear The camera app is intuitive, easy to use, and pro mode is a bunch of fun... for me anyway! after 3-4 hours of updates, disabling\removing bloatware and unwanted programs, the phone feels responsive and I'm able to play hill climb racing 2 without any hiccups. As a phone goes, everyone says my voice is clear, not much low end in the ear speaker from the other person, but it goes loud and it is clear, same goes for the stereo speakers at the bottom, speakerphone works well, there is no time warp delay, or hearing yourself when you call. I believe I have actually upgraded my phone, as a phone. My note 20 ultra 5g SUCKED as a phone constantly dropping calls. This phone feels premium in the had and the cameras are protected by the thinnest of phone cases. the clear included case works perfectly fine! ______________________________________________________________________________ I am very happy with it, overall. 10/10 FOR PRICE/PERFORMANCE would recommend this phone to anyone who does not care if things are INSTANT. I think they used SLOW lpddr, paired with slow mmlc 64GB creating a unique bandwidth problem. The pages scroll much better after things are loaded. (I'm using the phone for texting, conference, and yep, phone calls all are instant with no lag whatsoever, same with home-screen/phone/settings navigation all really smooth)

WON'T CONNECT to newer phone Hotspots because of cost cutting hardware even their reps admitted!!!
TCL, a company which I've bought TV's in the past from before, and since TV's are basically a bigger display screen and the cell phones a smaller display screen, I figured if they can make decent TV's, why not cell phones, correct? BIG MISTAKE!!! I bought this TCL phone soley for the purpose of using WiFi on it only and not even connecting for service as it's just something I wanted to watch sports and videos with. It does connect to my house WiFi just fine but when I attempted to connect to my iPhone 15 PM hotspot via WiFi when I was not at home, it just WOULD NOT connect, and since it is the ONLY phone or device that I own that won't connect to my iPhone hotspot, I know it's not my iPhone's hotspot problem. Originally thinking it might be my particular iPhone and this particular TCL phone, I also tried friends iPhone 15 and it will not connect to their hotspot either. This TCL phone does find the iPhone hotspot but when trying to connect after writing in password, the message "Obtaining IP address" will appear and it will show it as "Saved" but not connected. After multiple attempts at connecting, another message "IP configuration failure" will appear after which an "Authentication problem" message will next appear (see attached pics). Not understanding what's going on, I googled online and found forums where people actually had these similar problems, and a soulution for some people was to reset network settings and it might connect. I did that but still NOTHING!!! Frustrated and annoyed because I had already bought 2 cases and screen protectors for this TCL phone, I called T-Mobile Tech support/Apple Support and spent hours with them on the phone explaining the issue after which they both had me resetting both phones, resetting networks, changing hotspot names, passwords, leaving phones turned off for 10 mins after rebooting all to NO avail. And in the end after all that, they both came to the SAME conclusion... HARDWARE COMPATABILITY ISSUES!!! That this budget TCL phone lacks the newer wireless WiFi connectivity hardware and uses cost cutting cheaper outdated hardware that will not support the iPhone 15 hotspot which uses the latest wireless WiFi connectivity hardware and technology. Apple Support even went so far as to tell me that they've heard of cases where certain budget Android devices will connect to older iPhone hotspots but not newer ones and that if I were to try it with an older iPhone such as an iPhone 8 or 9, it will MOST probably connect!!! Annoyed and frustrated as heck at this point at all my WASTED hours on the phone and having to waste more time returning this phone, I checked the TCL website for their Customer Support number and decided to call them to ask them if this was really the issue before packing and starting the return process. The TCL rep was friendly enough but wanted to go through "troubleshooting" which after I heard the steps, EXPLAINED to him that it was all done two times already to no avail but he insisted on doing again. After another hour of resetting, changing names and pw's, rebooting and doing basically the same things the previous T-Mo/Apple techs had me do, the TCL rep concluded that since the TCL phone can connect to my house WiFi and older iPhones, it was the new technology in the iPHONE 15 PM THAT WAS THE PROBLEM!!! The TCL rep then went on to explain to me that the PROBLEM being that because Apple and other manufacturers flagship phones uses advanced and cutting edge technology that their bare bones budget TCL 40 series phones often cannot pick up, to not pair a cheap phone with a flagship model phone from another manufacturer because there will be compatibility issues. He also told me that in no way can a TCL phone compare and compete against and would definitely have compatibility issues with an iPhone (he even claims that he uses an iPhone himself, LOL). I really hope that my call with TCL was recorded and will be picked to be "used for training purposes". But all in all, this budget phone is good looking and I guess if you never plan on using it to draw WiFi from more "newer model" phones hotspots, it's a good buy for the price with its big screen and 90hz refresh rates. Battery life is decent but I like my phones bright and even at full brightness, this TCL phone was just too dim for me. I understand the cost cutting LCD/OLED screens used in budget or more top of the line phones but even among budget phones, this TCL display was dim. I have no use for this phone as it doesn't do the only one thing I really ask of it to do, so I will be returning it and probably looking at a budget Samsung A series phone or a Moto.

Excellent for it's intended use
I bought this phone to use as a AT&T backup to my T-Mobile main phone (Galaxy Note 20 Ultra) because we bike on a rural trail where T-Mobile service is spotty and AT&T service is stronger (or at least not spotty where T-Mobile is spotty). My bike app and Audible both require data to function so no data service = no trip recording and no audio book listening. I worked in person with a local AT&T rep to get a very affordable pay-as-you go plan with unlimited talk and data for the phone, which solves my connection problem. To extend my Note's lifespan, I also wanted to use the cheaper TCL phone to protect my more expensive Note from the dust, fall, rains, etc that occur on the trail, which brings additional value to the TCL phone for me. When not biking, I've used it as an music and audio book player, with social media apps, for searches, with the Sonos app to control my Sonos speakers, and with Tidal, YouTube, and other media sources. It has performed well in all these applications. It is a 5G phone but I can't speak to using it as a phone. I forwarded the TCL phone to my Note so I'll rarely, if ever, use it to make a call. I do receive texts from AT&T with no issues. The price for the device is excellent even with a few minor issues. The touch screen is somewhat less responsive than my Note; although, I'm learning the quirks of the TCL touch screen so this is becoming less problematic. There is no stylus, which I miss from the Note. I find myself missing some of the Note's Galaxy features like the edge panels. But, hey, can't have everything for $120 compared to $1K to $2K for a new Galaxy phone. The battery life is good. I've never had an issue with running out of power that interrupts use, but mine is never far from a charger and I carry a power bank during rides. In my use, a charge lasts at least a day to a day and a half. It charges quickly. It runs Android 13. In a tech literature review of the phone (which, unfortunately, I can't find now), I read that this TCL phone only includes 2 years of Android updates so security vulnerabilities due to out-of-date OS might become a problem. As far as I can tell, this is not mentioned in the Amazon product description or on the TCL website. I've never used the camera. I bought a fall-resistant case. I've dropped it a couple of times with no damage. I inserted a used, reformated microSD card to expand storage but I have almost nothing stored on the phone.

Read Review
The phone itself is great & I was very upset that I had to return it due to false advertising from the company that sells the phone. The description said MULTIPLE TIMES, in multiple descriptions, that the phone is compatible with my phone company. In the 2-4 descriptions, my phone company was listed 2nd in each one as being compatible. I ordered & guess what, it's not compatible with my phone company. I wrote the seller/manufacturer to ask if they can unlock it or send me a new one that works. Their response is, "it's not compatible with your phone company, we need to update the descriptions". They offered nothing for my inconvenience of spending $160+, waiting a week to be shipped, setting the phone up with EVERYTHING, having to factory reset, then wait 9 more days for them receive & submit my refund. Just all around FRUSTRATING & INCONVENIENT DUE TO THEIR NEGLIGENCE OF FALSE ADVERTISING *KNOWING* THAT IT'S NIT COMPATIBLE WITH THE PHONE COMPANY.

UPDATED REVIEW. TCL CAME THROUGH. UPGRADE TO 5 STARS!
Update: TCL contacted me without prompting (After reading my initial review). I have to say, they are the first vendor in my many years on Amazon (since the days when they only sold books) that I have been spontaneously contacted to correct a problem. Not only did TCL offer me a refund, they upgraded me (without additional charge) to their top of the line TCL 20 Pro 5G with 256 gigs of storagd, 8 gigs of processor RAM, an AMOLED screen (which is nothing shy of stunning), and all the goodies one can ask for, including a 3.5mm headphone jack and a micro SD slot. Upon return of the original, defective phone, TCL stood tall, and treated me like a rock star. Not only did they refund 100% of the cost of the original phone, but the upgrade was free! I am gobsmacked at their giving me ( free, after refunds) their flagship phone. I fully recommend TCL and their awesome customer service, and the new, upgraded phone works flawlessly with Verizon. It arrived factory unlocked, and I just had to call Verizon to activate it. TCL (and the superb customer support representative named "Emma") are, IMHO, the best in thebusiness, and I am completely satisfied with my replacement phone. A small aside, I feel TCL should start using Gorilla Glass, but a simple screen protector (Curved glass for less than $10) does a great job on this phone. Keep up the great customer care and keep making quality products, TCL! D.S. verified customer Arrived in undamaged box, but screen has damage right from the fact. Purchased new, not refurbished, should not have been sent a detective phone. Did activate it because I needed a phone, and still do! Also, phone reboots randomly and rejects updates. Phone updated, all updates appeared on screen, but when I reboot the phone, it reverted to original configuration without being reset. Screen damage not caused by me or by abuse. Display is really nice and phone processes quickly, but cannot get around receiving what appears to be a refurb, when I bought direct from Amazon as a full price new phone. Returning for credit, will likely buy a different brand...one with hardened glass screen. I never thought that a manufacturer like TCL would hide the fact the screen is plastic, and flimsy enough that something in the box tapped the screen during shipping (charger?) only to expose that the screen is not hardened glass. The reboot loss of updates issue effects functionality.
