## Description

desertcart.com: Flirc Raspberry Pi 3 Case : Electronics

Review: Beautiful, Solid, Functional. - PROs: (Basically everything...) 1. Excellent build quality and materials selection. No visible defects whatsoever. No sprue remnants, no split lines, nothing. Flawless. 2. Every bit as attractive IRL as in the published images - possibly more so. It's really the finest looking gadget-related accessory I've purchased in recent memory. 3. Very tight (in the sense of exact) dimensional tolerances. All port openings line-up perfectly with the ports on my test device. 4. Functionally, the case cools the CPU as advertised. One could only hope for additional heat-sinking of the other IC's, but it's not clear that it matters in my application. CONs: (Hard to cite any...) 1. Instructions concerning the installation of the heat-transfer pad were lacking. Not a big deal. There seems to be some confusion about whether or not to remove both the paper adhesive-patch cover AND the clear, thin adhesive-patch cover on the other side of the pad. FWIW, I removed both. I do not get the sense that it matters which side contacts the CPU and which side contacts the aluminum heat-sink. In fact, it may be acceptable only to remove the paper backing from one side of the conductive foam and to leave the very thin plastic on the other side, if future disassembly and access to the Pi are expected to be necessary. 2. Instructions on exactly how to pivot the Pi into place would have been helpful, given the precision fit. In my experience, it worked best to assemble the unit by (1) removing the SD card so that it does not protrude, (2) removing the backing from one side of the heat-conductive foam and adhering it to the CPU, followed by removal of the backing from the other side of the foam for mating with the top shell heat sink protrusion, (3) holding the metal case upside-down with USB port cut-outs to the right, lowering the farthest (connectorized) edge of the board into place, permitting the power, HDMI and audio connections to mate with the cut-outs in the aluminum case, (4) pivoting the board into its final position lowering the nearest edge gently onto the screw mounts, (5) placing the bottom plastic cover into place, (6) screwing the bottom shell, Pi and top shell together with the four included screws and finally (7) re-inserting the SD card. For me, attempting to insert the Pi3 by other strategy resulted in it binding into an incorrect position and almost refusing to yield for re-positioning. Alternative to my method might be the attachment of the conductive foam to the interior protrusion from the top aluminum cover, if preferred. I haven't tried it. Pleased with the thermal performance, ruggedness and aesthetics, I have purchased two of these cases so far, and I plan to purchase several more of them for use in my application.
Review: High Quality Case and Excellent Product Support - I'm writing this for an all encompassing view on my ordering and thought process. I have seen this case before when considering cases for my Raspberry Pi 3 and 3B+, but never had the chance to check one out until recently. Like many others have mentioned, it is well built and has an inner portion of the case that acts as a heatsink that spreads the heat evenly throughout the entire case. I wasn't sure how to place the Pi 3B+ inside at first, but I found a video that suggested you place the board with the HDMI port first, then lay down the other side naturally to get the correct alignment and fit. The included thermal pad seemed to stick and work to hold the Pi in place as I reached for the screws, but I was a bit surprised to see that the included hardware did not fit properly. They would not screw in all the way and I did not want to use excessive force to try to get the screws in: they simply would not go in. Others have been reviewing and reporting the same thing, but do NOT let this stop you from getting this case. I reached out to customer service and was quickly helped by Jason, a representative from Flirc. After describing the issue, he informed me that it was a "tolerance mismatch" and that replacement screws would be on the way. After a little delay in the mail (out of our control), the screws arrived and I was curious to try them as they looked similar to the included hardware. They fit perfectly and screwed in smoothly and precisely. At first, I was concerned looking at the bottom black plate that is under the main body of the case as it sat lop-sided a bit without any hardware. But, after thinking about it, I realized that it must be like this on purpose to compensate for the board once it's inside. After screwing down 3 screws, it was still not sitting level but the fourth screw did the trick with a satisfying clamping action and leveling of the case. The end result is a beautifully crafted piece of hardware that looks great and has a good weight to it in the hand. If some reviews of the screws not fitting properly are detracting you from purchasing this case, do not let this stop you. Reach out to them and they will reach out to you to make it right. I highly appreciate the level of support from Jason from Flirc. He went above and beyond to ensure that I was up and running with the correct parts. Moving forward, I will definitely look to replacing my current set of Pi cases in favor of this Flirc case. This company stands behind their products and will support you!

## Questions & Answers

**Q: do you think i can use a copper heatsink pad instead of the adhesive pad to make contact with the case?**
A: For a Raspbery Pi 3 B+ is not necessary, just apply some thermal paste between the cpu and Flirc case and you'll get better heat transfer instead of using the included thermal pad, screw case tightly.

If using a Raspberry Pi 3 (Not the 3 B+) then what I did on mine was using a copper shim of 1mm and applied arctic silver thermal adhesive between the copper shim and the Flirc case, after fully dried then apply thermal paste between the now permanently glued in shim in the case and the Raspberry Pi 3 cpu.

On both cases, it was the perfect solution to achieve the maximum overclock that the chip can without overheating and using a passive heatsink solution (no fans).

**Q: Can you see the leds now for the pi 3?**
A: Yes, but they are blocked if you are using any generation before. It was too difficult to support both, and most users are buying pi 3's now.

**Q: There are 2 chips on the Pi that seem to need heat sinking. This case only sinks one? Is the 2nd chip not heat sinked?**
A: Only the CPU, and it's arguable if the other chip needs a heat sink, really depends on your room temperature, never had a problem with any of mine.

**Q: Whenever i touch the siding of this case when the device is powered on, i get shocked and my raspberry pi 3 resets. what can i do?**
A: I have not this behaviour on my Flirc case... My you check the screws, which leads through the board. Have you also inserted the cooling pad?

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great case, works great with the RasPi 3 and the Libre Computer AML-S905X-CC Le Potato
*by D***O on March 25, 2019*

UPDATE: Recently got into using Libre Computer's AML-S905X-CC Le Potato board, which is a more power efficient and slightly more powerful board compared to the RasPi 3 models. The Potato was designed to fit the same form factor, and I'm pleased that the case works just fine with it. My solution was to cut the thermal pad and put one piece of the pad on each chip that the case's "heat sink pilla" fits right over. The only problem you'd have is if you plan to use the IR sensor on the Potato, in which case you might need to drill a hole or seek a different case. Just got mine today and did some testing with it. It's definitely solid and a bit more weighty than the average Pi case. The materials seem to be very good quality, especially the aluminum. I'd have to say that this is my favorite case so far. It definitely performs well as a heat-sink, and comes with two different cuts of thermal transfer pads to match the different CPU shapes between Pi models. Aesthetically, it looks sleek in a very stylishly simple sort of way. I like it. The aluminum has a matte finish and isn't too shiny (not a mirror finish). Likewise, the plastic has a "soft" matte finish, and is textured in such a way that it feels and looks soft to the touch. My only negative comment - and a very minor one at that - is that the plastic seems to like to absorb skin oils, and that finger prints and smudges show up on the top especially in certain lighting. It can be wiped away without too much effort, however, so it's really not a big deal. All in all, 10/10. I hope the manufacturer will continue to make these for future versions of the Raspberry Pi - please do!
