Hi Yes there is a little black tube so that the string can rest on the bridge without wearing the bridge down.

What is the average lifespan? If it starts sounding "tinny" or rings while playing other strings, is it time for a new string?

Depends on how much you play. From my experience, if you play 2 hours everyday, it will probably last 3 months.
