QWORK® Bike Stem Riser 124mm for 1-1/8" (28.6mm) Fork - Aluminum Alloy Bicycle Handlebar Extender

This is the third time I've bought this riser stem for my bikes! Last year I started to up grade my 3 bike with stem risers to get a better ride position on both my carrera vengeance bikes & my wife forme bike. The first thing I will say is the product is quite simply well made & well finished! the item is light strong & the finish on it is very good. All the securing bolts work well & fitting it was very straight forward & simple, with no modification of the brake or gear cables. it was just a straight forward job to uncouple the nadle bar & pop the stem riser straing in. Once fitted the new part did not look out of place, in fact it blended in with the original bike & you would not know it was an after market part. I've had the stem risers for over a year on 2 of my bikes & they are still looking brand new & in perfect condition. I have not needed to make any further adjustments on them & so far they are working well as intended

SUMMARY This is a well made stem extender which like all other extenders is best suited to use on a commuter type or leisure bike with a steel steerer tube. It comers with a selection of spacers needed to pre-set the head bearing, a stem cap and a long bolt. If I had any criticism it would be the lack of instructions/guidance for the bolt tightening sequence which is critical if the extender is to be installed properly The extender is well machined and the finish of good quality. The mechanical design of the extender mirrors similar extenders and like them to avoid damaging the screw threads it must be installed in the correct procedure. The extender works well on a steel steerer tube. However because of its design I would hesitate to use this on a carbon steerer tube or on a bike that was ridden aggressively. VALUE: The price point (£7.98) is at the low end of the market. However the make quality and functionality of this extender seems to be as good as the more expensive options making this a value for money purchase. MY NEED: I needed a simple extender to increase the height of the handlebars on a bike I use on a turbo trainer. This extender offered the functionality I needed at a very competitive price CONSTRUCTION: Understanding the design of the extender is crucial to understanding how to install the extender and its limits of use. The extender is machined from a single length of hollow bar. The clamp section is integral with the extender. Examining the clamp section shows that it is formed by machining a slot along the lower end of the extender. This means that the lower end of the clamp can and will compress together more than the top end which at the very end of the slot will not compress. THIS MATTERS as it determines the procedure for installation. It may also affect the suitability of the extender for use on carbon steerer tubes. The whole unit is finished in a black enamel type paint . The finish is good with no blemishes. The supplied tensioning screw is long enough to reach the star nut in the steerer tube but it is not threaded along its entire length meaning that if you wanted to cut the extender down in size you may not be able to screw the bolt sufficiently far down to tension the bearing. USE FITTING: Fitting the extender needs care and adherence to a tightening process and order. The order of tightening the securing bolts on the clamp is critical. Because of the construction the top bolt will never be able to close the clamp and if it is tried to tighten the clamp with this bolt it is likely that the thread in the clamp will strip and render the extender useless. The correct procedure is 1) tighten the bottom clamp bolt first. Tighten the bottom bolt firmly but not fully. The bottom clamp bolt is the one which closes the clamp. The top bolt DOES NO CLOSE THE CLAMP. 2) Then tighten the top bolt so that any looseness is taken up - but do not over tighten. 3) Then tighten the bottom bolt again and 4) then the top bolt. Repeat this top-bottom process until the extender is firmly fixed to the steerer. NOTE the top bolt does not close the clamp and is used only to take up any slack/looseness at the top of the clamp caused by tightening the bottom bolt. USE BIKE TYPE: Because it is the bottom bolt which close the gap in the extender it is the bottom of the extender which mainly clamps and holds onto the steerer tube. The top of the clamp does not, and cannot, close up as much as the bottom. This unequal pressure means that I would hesitate to use the extender on a carbon steerer tube which needs a clamp which can apply equal pressure along its entire length. Likewise because it is mainly the bottom bolt which holds the extender in place I would hesitate to use this on a bike which was ridden aggressively such as on a fast downhill mountain trail..

Fitted my bike and worked well to lift the handle bars up for better comfort, cannot wait to try it next time I ride my bike. Also made well.

My grand daughter had a child’s bicycle and the handlebars could not be raised any more as the spacers were in the top position. The bike manufacturer sold risers but this was a third of the price. Easy to fit and raised the handlebars more than enough with still more adjustment available for the future. Great buy, easy to fit and look good.
