Hal Leonard is very proud to present the first legitimate and legal editions of these books ever produced. You won't even notice the difference, other than that all of the notorious errors have been the covers and typeface look the same, the song list is nearly identical, and the price for our edition is even cheaper than the original! Every conscientious musician will appreciate that these books are now produced accurately and ethically, benefitting the songwriters that we owe for some of the greatest tunes of all time! Review: Great Book - Great Book. For whatever reason it's formatted so you can also read it on Kindle devices. You can also see two pages at once on the Kindle app on tablets. Hey Hal Leonard: format all the others this way!! ! Review: No honor among thieves... still ! ! ! ! - For years, this underground fake book was THE book you had to have to survive on any professional straight Jazz bandstand... and it was tough to find, not to mention expensive. So underground you had to whisper for it at the counter of only the hippest music shops in town and if no one was looking for thirty bucks or so they'd get you a copy... (I'm not joking !) Then it began floating around the net, and for some reason each time the sites would get shut down... and now finally, a "legit" copy is available. Though perhaps we'll never know the full story of just who exactly wrote it and where he/she/they lived... the fact is that the book (atleast for the time being) is now available... ironically by HAL LEONARD, the publishing company that tended to publish all those other FAKE BOOKS for years that made the REAL BOOK so appreciated (LEONARD's books tend to have great tune selections, but some of the worst changes in the world... in contrast, the REAL BOOK's sheets, though not perfect are usually a safe call when you're called up to blow, also unlike Scher's commercially available THE NEW REAL BOOK they're a lot more practical (i.e. you take one glimpse at the sheet and the form is staring right back at'cha !) - - One more funny ironic point, even if the anonymous author/authors were involved in this project its funny because I guess they'll now be pursuing people who BOOTLEG their books... outlaws joining the system... that's progress for ya ! All in all, books 1 and 2 are essential purchases (I pray 3 will become available too.) I actually tend to play more tunes from Book 2 which includes JEANINE, INDIANA, BYE BYE BLACKBIRD, NEARNESS OF YOU, however REAL BOOK I set the standard of what tunes we should play at our sessions. If there's any fault its the overdependence of musicians on it, to the point that many musicians simply don't learn equally important tunes found outside it (even though it does not include EVERY essential standard, it definitely gives you more than enough to survive...) but the fact is, its must have material... if you don't have it, go out and get it... unless you have a perfect ear and most the tunes already learned and memorized, you can't really call yourself a pro without it and will find yourselves embaressed at most sessions everytime a tune (9 times out of 10 at some sessions) is called from this book !

A Jazz Standard, with comb binding!
I have wanted to buy a copy of this book ever since it was recommended by my jazz improvisation teacher, back in my university days, which was many years ago. It was called the “Real Book” as a tongue-in-cheek answer to all the Jazz “Fake Books” that had been circulating, basically in the same format, but with different songs. At that time, the huge price deterred me and most of the other students from buying it, so we just relied on some xeroxed copies given to us for study by the teacher. Even without having the benefit of being able to try out more of the pieces in the book, it did open up the possibilities for us to understand improvisation and encouraged us to really learn the advanced chords. As I remember, the book back then was close to $100, and I was surprised to see it now for less than half that price, a new and un-used book! It arrived in perfect shape this morning, and I am looking forward to trying out some of the tunes, re-learning some of the more advanced chords. This book is written in very easy-to-read hand-written musical notes, adding to its charm. Black Orpheus, by the way, is listed as “Black Orpheus”, instead of its alternate name of “Manha di Carnavale”, as it appears in some other books. The book is published now by Hal Leonard, which was probably why the book has lowered in price, as it is mass-produced now, but it has not been altered from its original content or form. They do state that the errors have been corrected. I don’t know what those errors are, or if there are any other errors in this edition, but it looks good to me! The plastic comb format makes it really easy to read from any music stand. It stays open, no matter what. I’m happy that Hal Leonard did not “re-work” the original format. I have seen that there are more volumes to this book, which I have never seen in person, but if you click the section on the page “Real Book Songfinder”, it cross-references any song and locates it within one or more of the volumes. So if you are looking for one or more particular songs, do use that link on this page, and you might decide to get one of the other volumes as well. At 462 pages of sheer music, I think this Real Book is a great value!

Remember--No Lyrics
I bought all three volumes of this series. I like the hefty comb binding that lies flat on the music stand. The printing is large enough and simple enough to be read easily, even in slightly dimmed light. There is plenty of room to add one's own notes. There are some streamlined performance notes. I appreciate the index in the front. It has a variety of songs from the most revered jazz classics to some popular numbers. Still, the series does not have ALL the songs ever written during the jazz and swing era. That doesn't seem humanly possible, so I didn't expect it. BUT somehow I got it in my head that it had the words. Guess I was wrong. No words. This is not a huge deal because the words are pretty easy to get on the Internet whereas the tunes are not. Still, I wish the words were included. There is enough room on most of the pages, as they stand, that the words could have been included. As I collect the words I will hand print them under the staffs. Lack of words is the only reason I did not give all 5 stars.

5th Edition is gone--WE HAVE NO CHOICE!!!
I've heard a lot of jazz players complain about the "legal" edition of the Real Book. It is missing a handful of tunes and some say the changes are "wrong" on a lot of tunes. Others say that the changes for those tunes are "wrong" in the old 5th Edition and the 6th Edition is a timely, welcome correction. Perhaps it would be more accurate on both ends to say that the changes in the two versions of the books are different; Any melody note works with any cord, just functioning as different upper extension. Some options are simply tastier than others. If you don't like the changes, pencil in something different. In any case, now that you don't have to deal with black market production to get the thing, it's only around twenty bucks. What you should really do is get your hands on at least a dozen different fake books, compare changes on all the different tunes and memorize them. When was the last time you went to hear one of your jazz heros in concert and saw them flop a Real Book down on the stand? It doesn't happen and I'll tell you why: Time spent with your nose in a music stand is time not spent zoning in on the bass player's right hand and the groove swinging on the ride; you can't really put it in the pocket unless your paying close attention, watching and listening to the band. This book is a good resource for initially learning tunes, but let's get on with it and learn the tunes so we can leave the books home. The magic happens when everyone hears it and feels it together. No fake book will help you with that, no matter what edition it is.

I bought it to make me learn more chord variations. You need to like jazz or standards but it’s very useful in that context.
