That Rapid Blue Stuff Anaerobic Sealant 50ml Bottle

First off I'm not a plumber, but I do have some basic plumbing experience when it comes to fitting pipes and parts. I was rather nervous about changing an outdoor tap supplied by very old imperial iron pipework in a field, but had no choice as the old tap had failed internally, so it was a case of take a deep breath and get on with it. The historic fittings were rusty and corroded but came apart with a hefty shove on a big stilson wrench. Next I had to clean the rust out of the internal thread and then wash out the debris. Once clean I was ready to try this Rapid Blue Stuff. There are various videos on YouTube about it, but somehow each are missing that personal touch, the one where you *actually try it yourself*. I followed the simple instruction on the bottle, and then started to thread the new tap into the iron fitting. The tap thread seemed quite tight going into the fitting, and then got a bit tighter..... somebody several feet away spoke to me and I briefly turned to answer them, a few seconds, then I turned my attention back to the tap to find.....hold on....I can't move it ! Panic set in as I realised that it wasn't the tap thread that was tight in the iron fitting, it was the glue going off as I was screwing it in, and my very few seconds inattention to the task had given it curing time. I grabbed a big spanner and managed to get the tap in another thread and a half, and crucially upright (because when I had paused it was pointing sideways!), and that was it, that tap was threading in no further and the Blue Stuff had set solid!!! Needless to say, no leaks. The takeaway lesson here is, clean your components, apply the Blue Stuff, and don't pause to talk to someone!! It is an Anaerobic product, meaning that it cures (dries) only in an air-less environment. Putting it on the outside of a joint (or anything else) won't see it do anything whatsoever, it'll just remain wet and blue, and whilst it likely has a shelf-life it won't go off in the bottle (like super glue or silicone sealer does once opened) however when 'trapped' in a threaded fitting with no air present it then cures..... EXTREMELY FAST. Any overspill on the outside (in the air) remains wet and can be wiped off with a damp cloth. Subsequent mechanical disassembly is not possible without heat, they say, which says Blowtorch to me, so you might want to consider exactly where you used the stuff before doing so. I see no reason why you couldn't use this on other mechanical threads, particularly in high vibration environments, but that would be the user's choice of experiment. Summary, compared to traditional PTFE tape it's expensive, but I didn't struggle to either seal the pipe joint thread, or to / and-or to get the tap pointing upright, and never.... ever.... stop to talk to someone, even ever so briefly whilst mid-task !!

This remarkable sealant achieves a welding effect on threads within minutes of assembly, creating a robust seal that stands up to the test of preventing unscrewing and leaking, as evidenced by a successful pressure test. One standout feature is its ability to form a tight seal and secure hold without requiring the threads to be fully screwed in. This flexibility proved invaluable for my shower outlet arm because it faced upwards when fully screwed home. The sealant's quick setting time, taking only a few minutes, allows for efficient application, with any excess easily wiped away because it only sets on the assembled thread. Once set, assembled parts remain steadfast, even under extreme leverage. When it comes to disassembly, I put the sealant to the test by using a heat gun on a high setting for around a minute. I've applied this sealant across various components, including shower outlets, radiator valves, extensions, and reducers, experiencing no issues or leaks during pressure tests and operation (now one month on) for hot and cold systems involving copper, brass, and stainless materials. It's essential to note that this sealant is not suitable for plastic threads. While I detected no noticeable smells during use, adequate ventilation is advised, and it's best to avoid skin contact to prevent potential irritation. To provide a visual demonstration of its usage and strength, I've included two videos showcasing its application. Hand-assembled fittings and unable to break free with a spanner within 5 minutes, this sealant has proven its reliability and effectiveness and I would recommend it. 🛠️🔩👍
