The Rescuers (New York Review Books Children's Collection) Review: Lovely adventure - a prequel to the Rescuers my children and I love - Sweet little story; great for bed time chapter book reading with my preschooler and elementary child. They love the rescuers (just as I did as a child) and this is a prequel of sorts where the beloved characters Bianca and Bernard first meet. The premise is of course ridiculous as mice have abilities far beyond reality, but that’s the fun - to imagine and suspend disbelief. Kids loved it - fun nightly read for about a week. Review: Platinum blonde mice have more fun - Recommended for parents reading to older primary children. The kids won’t get all the jokes, but you will, and everyone will enjoy it. The rescuers are mice: humble, heroic Bernard, swash buckling Nils, and beautiful, charming Miss Bianca, who leaves her porcelain pagoda to lead an expedition to rescue a Norwegian poet from a dungeon. The disney cartoons are good, too.

Loved the story & illustrations...
Cute story!! I loved the movies growing up and I wish I had discovered this book years ago. I would recommend this book to anyone who loved Disney's movies or possibly a child in elementary school depending on the reading level 2-5 grade. However, this story is nothing like the movies. There happens to be a series on these characters, so I plan on reading the other books as well. The illustrations are nice too.

An old fashioned novel for kids
This book is like an odd blend between a children’s story and a literary novel of manners. It is a superb edition of the book with perfectly white acid-free paper, and detailed black and white illustrations. It moves a little slowly as it develops the characters, but it is fairly well-crafted writing that actually conveys worthwhile themes of commitment to help others and appreciating the the value of manners and traditions. For clarification, it is not the same narrative as the Disney film although it does introduce Bianca & Bernard in their first original adventure. The vocabulary feels like it is for ages 11+ yrs old In many instances even though the the basic plot is relatively simple. Not an easy one to categorize, but if you’re interested in a classic & old school adventure for kids, then this really nice edition may be for you.

Highly recommend for adults and children over 4
I already owned an old paperback of "Miss Bianca in the Salt Mines" and enjoyed that book on several readings. I'm an adult of 74 years now and thoroughly enjoyed reading this introduction of Miss Bianca to her mission of rescue! I highly recommend it to school-age children, their parents, and adults of any age! Especially if you love mice.

Loved this book growing up.
A favorite from my childhood. Was so happy to find this one reprint from the Miss Bianca series. I was sad that this is the only book in the series that I could find new on Amazon. The illustrations by Garth Williams are enchanting. Will keep looking for here in case other books in the series show up.

I could not use this as the gift I had ...
I could not use this as the gift I had intended for a 9 year old. The print was way too small. He would never have read it. Maybe for a 12 year old. .

ENGLISH: This is the first time I've read this book, although I had watched the Disney film, which is based on the first two books in the series (this one and "Miss Bianca"). In fact, although the film keeps the title of the first book, it is mainly based on the second, where the person to be rescued is a little girl, rather than a Norwegian poet in a dungeon. I love the personalities of the three protagonists: Nils the Norwegian mouse, Miss Bianca, the aristocratic little mouse, and Bernard, her submissive and courageous assistant.

Someone recommended this book to me and I’m so glad I listened. I read it aloud to my children (10, 9, and 7, and a 3 year old who joined in sometimes) and we were really entertained by it. I think we’ll be referencing bits of it as a family for a long time (porcelain pagodas! The chairwoman! Mamelouk! The dark castle!). Memorable characters, outlandish adventure and bravado, just the right contrast of suspense and nonsense. I tweaked some parts if my three year old was listening so he wouldn’t be afraid, but the older children were mostly ok with it. There are a few details that may be tricky for sensitive readers. I moved through those quickly and there was enough fun content to balance it out. The sentence structure feels older linguistically so I’m not sure my children would have stuck with it if I wasn’t reading it to them - but that said, they may read it again themselves now that they are fond of the story. Please note - it’s completely different from the old Disney movie I grew up with!

This book is in amazing conditions, the hardback edition is very nice and sturdy. Of course, this is a childhood favourite and one of the few books I am buying to create a little "children adventures" shelf in my apartment. My plan is to create leather binding customized to the different stories, but this book came in such amazing form that I am actually pretty much happy to leave it like this.

Good book, purchased as used for uni essay, story not quite the same as the Disney film as, as usual, Disney made the story go where he wanted.

The Rescuers is a 5 star children's novel. As a child, I loved any sort of mouse adventure stories, but none were as well written as Margary Sharp's 'Miss Bianca' series; and the best of these was easily 'The Rescuers' However, Garth Willims' illustrations were not a part of this edition, and they really are part of the book. Try to imagine 'Alice in Wonderland' with only text and you'll see what I mean! This will still make a good read, but I'm going to order antother edition with the illustrations: The Rescuers
