Adult Sized Venus Flytrap - Fly Trap - (Dionaea Muscipula) Carnivorous Plant 3 inch Pot

Really enjoying watching this plant do it's thing. It arrived in great shape; the roots were packed in wet moss and the top was secured, but not squished. It was a bit of work to get it planted. The long skinny roots need to go through the provided moss growing medium so they can barely touch the water the plant sits in (and the moss absorbs). The root bulb has to be under the moss, but not in the standing water. All this goes into a grated plastic container that you then have to place in enough distilled water to cover the bottom 1/4 of the container. Getting everything in the right place took a while and was a bit frustrating. For a plant that eats bugs, these things are super delicate. You can only use distilled or reverse osmosis water on them. Anything else will kill them fast. I was spraying some ivy in a growing tray near the Venus Fly Trap with tap water about a week ago and a little got on one part of a plant. The touched area turned pretty black within 24 hours (which the instructions said would happen). I pulled it off, figuring the problem could spread. You need to keep the bottom quarter of the container in distilled water, which is then soaked up by the moss. The point here, is that this thing is more work than most house plants. The above said, the plant IS really cool. If you enjoy taking care of plants, this one will give you plenty of opportunity. They don't need to be fed much, actually. One bug a week in the winter, maybe two in the summer. Mine got its first roly poly about a week ago. It closed right down on it and got tighter as the bug tried to get out. It's still digesting it a week later. I see new little baby traps sprouting already. The instructions that came with the plant are very thorough. The seller definitely seems like he wants you to succeed with your plant, offering a an email address and phone net to contact them with issues. I gave the plant four stars on ease of assembly, because, as described above, it was more work than any house plant I've ever had to get set up. The four stars on giftability is due to the fact that, unless someone wants one, you're dropping something of an unexpected burden on them with your gift. It's like giving a friend a tropical fish as a gift the night before Christmas. But the fish needs to eat every 30 minutes, only eats really expensive, really hard to find food. Also, the only store that sells the food is 3 hours away, and is only open 4 hours a day on three days a week. So yeah. Maybe make sure whoever you wanna give one of these to really wants one. Personally, I love mine so far.

Such an awesome little plant and something I’ve always wanted. It arrived green and healthy and larger than I expected. It was very well packaged but I have never received a plant in this way. Assembly required. I wish it was already potted but instructions are detailed and seem to be easy to follow. There was a diagram on how to repot it which is great since I don’t have a clue. The seller provided contact information for questions or concerns which is reassuring. Although I was happy with this I will definitely use distilled water so have some ready for yours when it arrives. Minerals and chlorine in tap water can be deadly. Be sure and use it to soak the moss before planting. I also ordered some carnivorous plant food spray also from Amazon until I can get to a pet store for crickets or whatever Audrey II can eat. She will need about one bug a week. Since she will be grown indoors I will be using a full spectrum grow light for at least 6-7 hours a day kept 4 to 6 inches above her and providing darkness at night while maintaining high humidity by placing her pot on a tray pebbles with water keeping the roots above the water. I don’t think my 60+ years of gardening experience is going to help me with this little girl but with some patience and love we will fine. Hoping for a healthy and happy Audrey II. Update 5 days later. For me having to pot this plant in moss instead of potting soil even with detailed instructions was stressful since I as afraid I would harm the tiny roots but thankfully although not looking quite as robust she is still green and thriving. Today I received another fly trap from a different seller in a 2” pot with good soil that I can simply repot in potting soil suitable for a fly trap when needed which is so much better. If I purchase another flytrap I will have to know from the listing how it will be potted when I receive it. For that reason only I would not purchase from this seller again.

I’m pretty upset about this plant because it’s expensive with shipping and so are most of the ones online. I felt the plant would have been okay if I ignored the instruction from the seller, but it had great reviews and everyone said ‘follow instructions exactly’ so I did (including reviewers who seemed to have a variety of other carnivorous plants). I unpacked the plant had distilled water ready, didn’t overwater, kept it near an air purifier and source of light for ventilation and the basics (not direct light to burn it). It basically shriveled up and is dying and I surmise it’s the potting medium which I thought would be fine. Yes, it’s a hot humid summer and it does evaporate or get taken up by the plant quickly. The water evaporates very quickly but it’s definitely not over watered either. I’ve repotted it a few times to see if height relative to soil would matter (but not too much because too much messing with it is stressful for the plant). In this setup, as recommended by the seller though, I just can’t comprehend how it would survive. The first 2 photos are of the plant currently, and I think its days are limited. The next 3 photos are a healthy Venus fly traps had last year, just to compare the potting mediums and sellers. Last year I bought a $5 Venus fly trap from trader Joe which appeared to be more of a cactus potting medium for succulents and that plant flourished and grew and needed to be repotted. The only reason I ordered this one is because I didn’t know the plants go dormant in winter so when I saw it dry out last fall 2024, I figured I’d killed it somehow and now that I know it’s just dormant, I though I shouldn’t have thrown the twig away and could have waited until spring for it to come back (like my poinsettia). So I sprung for the expensive Venus fly trap because of the reviews. I feel strongly had I put it in another medium it might have survived because this one’s seems totally dried out. But I ignored my gut and stuck to the instructions. This would make sense to me for another tropical plant like an orchid but I don’t think this fly trap was getting the moisture needed in this setup. I was hoping it would eat some fruit flies and after all the instructions most the traps have died anyway. I either received a faulty plant or this setup doesn’t work for the environment. I tried putting it in humid spots like a bathroom window with indirect light, I tried a grow light, basically everything except for a change in the potting medium. Terribly disappointed. Don’t buy this, it’s more work than a cheaper version from the grocery store. For $5 I had a healthy beautiful plant last year in a cactus potting medium and it flourished. I fed it a few live Asian beetles, but this plant isn’t healthy enough to feed any critters to.

Good VFT. No problems, plant is very viable. Easy paper instructions included. Videos on Joel's website if you prefer to do the instructions that way. Make sure you have the required kind of water as this VFT needs a certain kind of water (I think there's 3 to choose from; distilled, reverse osmosis, or rain water). Good price too for a high quality VFT!

The plane arrived well packaged, wrapped in moss and papertowel and the stems were in plastic. When I took it out of the box one of the stems was broken off. A few of them were brownish/black. 2 turned black and shriveled up the next day. I followed all instructions exactly as instructed on the pamphlet. I think out of all I have maybe 3 that may survive. I was so excited. I did reach out to customer service and I'm still awaiting a reply Update: So far still no reply from the seller. My plant has one trap that I think is actually alive. It had a very small trap and it's gotten bigger but the others don't seem to be active as I watched an ant run around for 5 minutes and then finally escape Another update: I have 3 new traps! They are standing and not hanging like the ones I received. Also still never got a response from the seller

I was researching carnivorous plant sellers, and stumbled across Joel's Carnivorous Plants by accident. What intrigued me was the number of positive reviews he has gotten from his buyers. It's rare to find a company that consistently gets so many 5 star reviews. So, I decided to buy two plants and see how it worked out; his prices are extremely reasonable. I am so glad I found this company. This is someone both knowledgeable about his product, and genuinely concerned about customer service. The plants arrived across country in just two days. I ordered both the Venus flytrap and a Sundew plant. They were packed with perfect care, contained ample amounts of quality sphagnum moss, and a perfect plastic net pot to plant them in. They also came with detailed instructions. The only things you will need to get started are a container, (like a glass bowl to place the net pot in), and a quantity, (about a gallon), of either reverse osmosis, or distilled water, which you should easily be able to find at a grocery store in the bottled water section. That's it, give them good amounts of sunlight, pot the plants according to the directions, and your plants will thrive. I have since ordered 4 more of different varieties of carnivorous plants from this seller, and in each case my positive experience was the same. In each case he has sent emails inquiring if I had received my plants, and when I emailed questions about care of the plants, he got right back to me with detailed responses. I love all the plants I have received and find it fascinating to watch them. Side note ... as I was reading one night in the room where I have the plants, a small but very annoying fly got into the room. I swatted at it several times, but missed. I then watched as it went over to my plant collection. Bad move fly! It landed on my purple pitcher plant, (another one of Joel's additions). It circled the edge briefly, checked out the inside of the plant, and PLOP!!! It fell right in. No more fly ... right to the bottom of the plant for its dinner. I was smiling from ear to ear watching that. I almost never write reviews for companies, but I have had such a good experience with this seller, that I feel he deserves the positive feedback. Obviously, others feel the same as I do. If you are even remotely interested in starting a hobby growing carnivorous plants, look no further than Joel's Carnivorous Plants. You will not be disappointed.

I’m going to start off by saying I have only ever shopped for carnivorous plants locally so this is the first time I have received one in the mail. The way this plant was packaged was interesting but seemed to be done with care. The pot and moss needed came with it but the plant was in a plastic bag. In the bag the plant had moss and a wet paper towel around the roots that was still damp when I received it. Though it was a strange way to receive a plant I don’t think that there would have been a better way without soaking the box. The VFT I received has five heads one of which was dying when I received it. It is a small plant but that is expected with VFTs. Of the other four there were three that were open and one that was closed. All of the heads are red which is indicative of a healthy plant. One of the leaves also is black and dying so that leaves me to have some concern. Though in the past I have learned that VFT can be a bit unforgiving so travel was probably hard for it. The instructions that came with the VFT and care were clear and concise. There was a diagram on how to repot it so that’s good for beginners. I will try and remember to update in a few weeks to see if the plant survives the shock from transport. For any future buyers be sure that you have distilled water at home for the arrival of this plant. I had some for my other plants but if I didn’t I would have had to rush to grab some to soak the moss.

This product is the perfect selection for any new carnivorous plant grower that wants to grow a Dionaea (Venus Flytrap). This is the third plant that I have bought from this seller and I cannot express what great experiences these purchases have been. Each and every plant has been perfect. These plants are the only successful online carnivorous plant purchases that I have ever made. The plant was shipped extremely fast. It went from California to Virginia in just two days. I then opened it up and was pleasantly surprised by how many traps were on the plant and also by the size of the traps. There were also many other traps that were quickly emerging from the active Venus Flytrap. I was then able to feed my plant small divided up worms. The plant is doing splendidly in my windowsill. The pot that the Dionaea came with is the perfect pot to go with a carnivorous plant because of its size and its filtration. Water can easily pass through the pot and the soil making it very easy for growers like myself to replicate habitat conditions for the plant. It fits very nicely in my windowsill and is easy to water. Another object that comes with this great purchase is the high quality sphagnum peat moss. The order comes with more than enough moss for you to pot your plant with. It is also some of the best Carnivorous Plant soil that one could come across. It is very easy to pot and the sphagnum is great at absorbing that water that I put in the pot and it helps me regulate water and keep my plant mice and moist. There is also a care sheet that comes with the purchase and tells you just about everything you need to know for correctly cultivating a Dionaea. I read through each caresheet I get several times before even opening up the rest of my package. And even if there is a question I have that is not explained on the care sheet, I simply e-mail Joel and retrieve the answers that I need. He responds to my e-mails almost instantly. I have never waited more than a day for his response to one of my e-mails.
