This is hot! No, cool! No, hot! (with 2016 update)
August 3, 2016: Nine years later, after running 24 hours a day in the summer and about half that in the winter, and having been dropped twice from a height of four feet onto a tile floor a few years ago, my trusty 733 is still (literally) humming along. The clips that hold the grill cracked off the second time it was dropped, but $25 (shipping included) for a new replacement grill has restored it to like-new condition. I just love the fan's sound. At any speed, the Vornado 733 sounds smoother than other brands, more whirring than windy. On low I can't really hear it at all, on medium it's easy to hear TV and noises from other rooms even when the fan is only a few feet away, and on high the sound is pretty loud, but low pitched enough that it's not annoying. Fan size matters, whether it's made by Vornado or not. A small fan on high is louder than a larger fan on low blowing the same amount of air, but the small fan won't keep the air in as small a stream or move it as fast. or as far. You'll simply be happier with a fan that's large enough to do the job quickly and quietly on low or medium speed. To get the most out of a Vornado fan, you need to understand how it works and experiment with placement and direction. As advertised, the fan can circulate the air to equalize the temperature in a single room, usually by putting it in one corner and pointing it at the ceiling in the corner diagonal from it, or, in a smaller room, by simply pointing the airflow straight up at the ceiling or at an opposite wall. You can also use it to throw air from one area of your home to another, whether it's to blow air upstairs, downstairs, or straight into a problem room. For example, my 733 spends the first hour of the day sending air 40 feet from the living room window A/C to the far end of my stuffy kitchen; the rest of the day it circulates living room air by bouncing it against the ceiling above the kitchen door, while a smaller Vornado keeps the cool air moving into the kitchen. Original review July 4, 2007: I've had the old classic 210 with variable speed for five or six years to circulate window air conditioning in my big L-shaped living room. I'm buying this one to blow cool air from one bedroom to another at night so I don't have to carry the other one around when I go to bed. This one is virtually identical to the 210, except it's 3 speed and only has 3 positions. But I have finally figured out that I don't need to pay infinitely variable speed or infinite positioning. The west side of my living room can reach 110 degrees or more in the afternoons. The only window I can put an A/C in faces the other side of the room. So I put the Vornado on the floor near the A/C and aim it so that the compact air stream hits the stream of air from the A/C and blows it to the hot end of the room. I'm astonished at how well this works. The rest of the year, when I'm not using the A/C, I use it like a ceiling fan by aiming it straight up. This baby really can throw air all over the place in a compact stream. They're right when they call it an air circulator. On low pointing it directly at yourself is OK, but because of the narrow air stream it works best pointed at the ceiling or a nearby wall to cool you indirectly. It's very, very quiet at low settings. At medium it sounds like any fan; at high it is about as loud as any average fan at its high setting. But you only need it on high when you're really trying to move a lot of air quickly. Vornado fans are worth every penny. Not many products actually live up to their hype, but this one does. I can't wait to get the new one.

Vornado's make the best air circulators
Vornado's are quality products. I bought my first one in 2003, my second one in 2004, and just bought my third one. The first two are still working great after all these years. They really do keep the room cool on warm days, and help circulate the air, from the air conditioner, to help cool the room. Right now, they are also part of my home automations system. The Vornados I have are either plugged into an iDevices switch: iDevices Switch - WiFi Smart Plug w/ Energy Monitoring, No Hub Required, Works with Amazon Alexa or an iDevices Wall Outlet: iDevices Wall Outlet - Wifi Smart Outlet w/ Energy Monitoring, No Hub Required, Independent Outlet Control, Works with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Android . My home automation also consists of an iHome SmartMonitor: iHome iSS50 5-in-1 Smartmonitor, 24/7 Home monitoring from anywhere . Since these devices area all Homekit compatible, I use Homekit triggers to turn on the Vornados when the temperature in each room gets to be a certain value, and then turn them off when the temperature is lowered to another value. It works great, and the combination of the 3 Vornados keep the house fairly cool during these warm summer days. Vornado now makes their products with remote, and temperature, controls. But since older products still work fine, I didn't see a need to throw them out and buy the more expensive products, especially since I've decided to outfit my house with home automation and can achieve the same goals. Plus, with my home automation, I can control the Vornados from anywhere in the world, as long as I have internet connection. Lots of people complain that these are noisy. I admit they are not the quietest fans, but I don't think they are that loud either. But, if you want a quieter fan, I recommend the newer model to this one: Vornado 660 Large Whole Room Air Circulator Fan . It's much a much quieter version than the one in this listing. However, the 660 cannot be used with home automation devices since is uses an electronic switch instead of a manual switch. Home automation devices will be able to turn it OFF, but now ON. But it any case, I like the 733 because of the noise as it helps me sleep as night and I don't find it bothersome. Which ever model you choose, I think you that they work very well.

I bought the 733 Full-size and it's definitely not as quiet as some people say it is. Also, this is a 16" tall by 15" wide behemoth. Even on the lowest speed the noise factor is equivalent to the second speed of my cheap 12" 20$ home depot fan. The good thing is that even though it's ever so slightly louder, it pushes a ton more air. You don't feel it because of the radius over which it pushes air but it's a huge improvement over any other fan I've ever owned. The whole head is outputting air, compared to regular fans that always have that dead zone in the middle. Aimed right, this unit is full of potential. And for those that care, the white noise is a very good and constant sound on low, and more like a blower fan the higher you go. The thing that I don't understand is why all these knob fans have the speeds from high to low instead of low to high. I mostly use it on low and it's kind of a pain when I have to go through all the other settings to shut it off.

I'm very pleased with the performance and quality of this fan. I primarily use it during workouts to keep me cool, it works great. Airflow is a wide and forceful, definitely circulates a large room. I have other fans of theirs, all are good quality, though this one is my favorite. After 1 year, it's working like brand new, never had any issues or concerns, and I expect it to last a long time. Recommended.

Push a lot of air but can get pretty loud. I have one in my bedroom and have to keep it at the lowest speed or it is way too loud to sleep. Good thing is that it still push a lot of air at the lowest speed.
