When mounted the collar doesn't give you a perfect balance at the plate. If you set it on a table it's camera heavy and falls backward, even with the lens all the way out, but not by much. You could always mount a longer Arca swiss plate to it as well if the balance wasn't what you wanted. The base plate is actually removable and you could reverse it which may balance it better but then you wouldn't be able to also use the BG-E22 grip (it's fully compatible with the grip the way it is though). When I lock it on the tripod though it feels much sturdier and better balanced than if I'm mounting it via the camera tripod mount. The switches are still accessible, but naturally harder to access than without the mount. It's very well made and feels strong and sturdy, when you tighten it on the lens the screw tightens all the way onto itself and locks very securely to the lens so it appears you cant over tighten it and damage the lens It hasn't scratched my lens but I've not used it often, remember the lens is maybe polycarbonate so it may be possible, I just haven't had that happen. I think it will be ok because there is no movement once it's locked on. I still take care when putting it on though. My purpose was to give me a more secure tripod method as I use the lens for not only wildlife on occasion but landscapes, and more so need this for long exposure, but as I say I haven't had much chance to test it in that scenario, but it looks good to fit that function.

Awesome accessory for the lens and this will relieve stress of the camera when mounted in a tripod. It's made of metal which will last for a long time. When used it also help in steadying the camera when shooting.

The collar fits the lens securely and provides a rock solid mount. No complaints there at all. The problem is, the collar does not allow the camera to be rotated into a vertical portrait mode via the collar. I can see why this feature is not available (Interference with the switches on the lens), and would be difficult to provide, so no fault of the design there. Nevertheless it severely limits the usability and value of the collar.

I bought this to provide better balance when I place my Canon RF 100-400mm lens on my tripod. It is strong and sturdy. I recommend this for your lens.

Very well made lens collar. Fits the RF 100-400 very snugly. Cups the rear of it, in effect, so it’s very stable. I returned mine for only one reason: the inability to rotate the collar to take vertical shots. Otherwise a well-made after market solution.

I shoot primarily wildlife and have been tag teaming an R5 with 100-500mm and an R7 with 100-400mm using the R5 primarily for stills and the R7 for video. While the 100-400mm is light enough that it doesn't stress the lens mount with the camera mounted to the tripod, the balance is really bad and it can be difficult do subtle adjustments on the fly. So I decided to give the iShoot collar a shot. After getting an empty Amazon shipping envelope the first time I finally got the collar Sunday. First impressions, two major negatives, one expected one not: 1. The collar does not rotate because of the controls (expected) 2. The lens must be removed for the collar to be put on/taken off (unexpected) I've bought aftermarket collars for non-collared lenses back in my Nikon days (like for the 70-200mm f4) and they all could be added and removed without removing the lens. That this one cannot is something I should have anticipated if I looked hard at the images, but that it's not means that either I need to remove the lens in the field to add it, or I need to shoot handheld with it on and it's very much in the way. My issue with having to take the lens off is that wildlife shooting isn't always in the most docile of conditions - wind blowing, pollen, dust, and sand flying - the idea of opening up both the lens and body to those things is troubling. So that's the major thing. One minor hiccup is that the placement and length of the foot only really balances when the lens is fully extended to 400mm. Again, given the weight of the body and lens this could have been anticipated and if it remains problematic I can actually go to a solution I had tried before buying the collar and use a longer rail extended back towards the body to allow me to reposition the camera on the mount. This requires removing the nuts on the bottom of the arca mount but that's expected. In one of the Amazon photos it shows the foot at almost equal level with a gripped R5/6, but I don't have that option with the R7, so when placed on a table/seat it's balancing on the heal of the foot and the back edge of the camera, and there's really no good way to set the camera down without it being wobbly. The other minor hiccup is the switch access. The lock switch is not nearly inaccessible with anything but small fingers as the collar is close to the camera grib and I can actually imagine some folks getting blisters from fingers rubbing on the collar if you have sausage fingers like me. On the other side, with the collar pressed all the way forward it seems like the forward edge of the switches are covered slightly while the back edge is clearly visible making the switches slightly harder to access when they are in the AF and ON positions, but they are still accessible. Otherwise? It does what it's supposed to and is the only current option I can find that solves the pseudo-balancing of this lens on a tripod with an R7. For that reason I'm likely not going to keep it, but it's a 2/5 product for me at this point. If they hinged it at the top so I could add/remove it with the lens attached to the camera it would be a 4. The rest could be fixed, but I don't know whether it's worth their time for the limited market? I hope so. Note: while this review is written specifically for use with the R7 the issues I point out, with the possible exception of access to the lock switch, remain when connected to an R5 or R6.

Doesnt really fit that well. isnt alligned with the switchs and doesnt have a stury seating around the lense. Difficult to put on straight. When you tighten it you get a nasty crunching noise as the metal lip around the back digs into the lense, despite the seller stating that its made to not scratch or wear the lense.

Reçu en parfait état , et rapidement Se place sur l’objectif RF 100-400 mm avec précision et comme déjà décrit par d’autres acheteurs . Se place sur mon tripode parfaitement , Je suis très heureux et satisfait de l’achat ! Un inconvénient est qu’il faut détacher l’objectif du caméra pour le placer et le retirer, mais bon…. Mon seul inquiétude est de savoir quand arrêter de serrer la vis de fermeture , sans endommager l’objectif pour assurer que l’objectif ne bouge pas en roulant , pendant que nous zoomons , mais je fais attention en m’habituant .

Item was fine, but it 'was left in a safe place'. The safe place was thrown over next door's high, locked gate. This happens quite regularly with Amazon deliveries, even though I have a lockable box on my gatepost.
