any one ever use this at home on a gas stove... and can the wooden handels be removed to do an oven type seasoning ?

yes, the wooden handles can be removed and it can be oven season. the other thing is that it is real versatile I use it on my gas stove as well as a campfire

The entire handle unscrews, which makes it much easier to season before use.

If you take the handles off for use on a gas stove, is it hard to open the lid and to turn the waffle iron over?

It is pretty heavy even without the handles. You can use a heavy-duty tongs or the "Ov glove." I didn't care too much for this iron - it's made in China and even after I followed all the pre-cooking instructions, it still has a bad metallic smell, and I don't really trust whatever metals this was made from in China.....
