I test a piece of scrap of the same wood I intend to cut to see which set of teeth work best. It seems that the smaller amount of stock to remove, the fine tooth side works best since it prevents splitting or splintering the the edge of the stock. For removing more stock on an edge, you can start with the course side to remove a larger piece of stock, then fine tune you final cut with the fine tooth side. Please Remember: this saw is a “finishing tool” and not a hack saw or a coping saw. It was primarily intended to trim off protruding dowel pins to make them flush with the surface. The blade is very thin so that you can press it flat against the wood surface to achieve flush cuts. If that is what you need, this is a really good tool.
