A Breaching/Demolition/Destroying T’Hawk
First, ask yourself what you want this t’hawk for? I see some folks complaining, “too heavy to carry.” If you are looking for an axe/hatchet for camping/backpacking/canoeing, there are better options out there. I would suggest a folding Sven Saw (less than a pound), and a stout camp knife for batoning wood. Leave the axe/hatchet for when you’re taking the mule train. Sven Saw uses less energy, and is quiet, too. It doesn’t attract Big Foot, like chopping wood ; ) Sven Saw is safer to use in wilderness when far from an emergency room. Think cooking/camping fire; not timber logging. I keep an axe in the truck for blow-downs, and such, but that’s an axe, not a t’hawk. Still want a hatchet for the woods? Fiskars 7850 is a light weight woodsman hatchet, and gets good reviews. Both Sven Saw, and Fiskars 7850 are available on Amazon.com. If you plan on using this as a tactical/defensive weapon, I suggest you get some martial arts training, or at least study Cold Steel’s DVDs on the subject. When you raise up to swing a t’hawk in an overhand swing you can leave yourself vulnerable to counter attack. Unless you’re into counting coups, or some crazy stuff, there are probably better weapons, and lighter/faster t’hawks made for that purpose. “Evasion?” If I had a good knife I’d probably lose the ‘hawk to reduce weight and travel fast. I do keep a short handled t’hawk in the truck for a different, ‘E,’ “Escape.” I don’t trust the glass breakers on knives, or, that I won’t slice an artery using them, if I ever go in the drink and have to escape from my vehicle. I will admit that a rock collector’s/geologist’s rock hammer would probably work just as well. This t’hawk may be a little long for escape, and getting a full swing from inside a vehicle. Check with your local laws about carrying a t’hawk in the cab of your vehicle. I think the best use of this ‘hawk is for the first, ‘E,’ “Extraction.” This would make short work of breaching glass, doors, locks, door frames, etc. This would be great in combo with a good pry bar. Nice, long, full tang, one piece handle. The 1070 tool steel should be tough enough to handle what you throw at it, and is one of the better steels I have seen S&W Knives use on its tools. This t’hawk seems more suitable for breaching/demolition; not a blade to send wood chips flying, like a felling/woodsman axe. But, it could be pressed into service for light bush craft duties if the need arose. S&W 671 E&E Tomahawk is a great ‘hawk to keep in the truck in case you come upon an accident scene where folks are trapped inside their vehicle, or trapped by rising flood waters, or your neighbors are away, their house is on fire, and you can hear the dog scratching at the door trying to escape. Keep one in the basement in case you get trapped by tornado debris. This is a purpose designed tomahawk, and appears well made for its purpose. Full tang, no weak points, such as handle attachment. Like your Scoutmaster always said, “Be Prepared Scout.”

Top-Notch Product
This is a top-notch, SOLID piece of well-designed equipment. It is NOT a toy or for screwing around on the weekend. NOT a camp axe--but in answer to the other reviews which say that it is "too heavy to carry:" you need to get off the couch and do some pushups or shoulder raises. Same to those who say it is "too heavy" in terms of swinging/deployability: do some physical exercise. The grips are cushioned and comfortable--if you think your hand is going to "slip," buy a glove. The handle offers 3 positions so you can "choke up" if need be. Not a "light combat 'hawk" but, really folks, you aren't Hawkeye, and this isn't "Last of the Mohicans." Which, honestly, makes this axe the best option vs. its competitors' priced from $200-$500--come on guys, really? Stop living in that fantasy world. Sharp out of the box--not shaving sharp, but meat cleaver sharp. This is the perfect tool to breach car doors, car windows, residential doors, pretty much anything you want to breach. The 1070 steel is TOUGH as nails. In a pinch, you could use it for CQC, but I would say unreservedly that you would need to PRACTICE with it A LOT to get used to the feel prior to your self-defense experiment because, if you don't, you'll hurt yourself just as much as the other party. Again, this is NOT a toy. Throwing? Uh--why? NONE of my training/experience has ever led me to believe that throwing away your weapon is a clever course of action. This is the best item of its kind out there, and the price point cannot be beaten.

This Tool and Amazon Rock!
First, Amazon is a lesson in customer service. When the item failed to show well after expected date, Amazon sent a replacement that I received the next day. Customer Service. This item is EXACTLY as advertised. Definitely not a toy. Heavy, solid, quality tool. It is designed to do a job and I have no doubt it will do it well. The only negative (as expressed elsewhere) - the blade cover is useless. No way you could carry on your belt securely. It is very difficult to even get all the snaps connected - the blade has to set in one particular spot for this to happen. I would never trust it to stay closed while moving about. But the weapon/tool is fantastic and well worth the investment.

Axe is excellent. Sheath not great though.
The axe itself is very robust and solid. It should stand up to just about anything you ask it to do. It's fairly heavy so bare that in mind if you plan to carry it in a pack. It's a great tool for exactly what they built it for which is an entry or extraction tool. It can be used as a simple camp axe, but it's not going to chop through wood as well, mostly due to the edge profile on it. However, the edge is more designed to cut through sheet metal like on vehicle bodies, or commercial building type entry doors and not chip out like a straight profile for chopping wood. You could just change the blade profile with a sharpening puck easy enough if you would prefer to have an extremely heavy duty camp axe however. The sheath is the only reason I gave this product 4 stars. It's barely useful. The axe can very easily unsnap the retention buttons and fall out, if you tried carrying it on your belt or outside of your pack. A more useful and durable kydex sheath would be more practical for it. I am making one for mine since I haven't seen one made commercially for it. Other than that, it's well worth the money in my opinion for keeping in a vehicle for emergencies, or keeping with your bug out bag.

For some reason felt the need to purchase both this and a katana, getting ready for camping season, much to the ire of my girlfriend. The katana didn't come, but this product did. Happy with the distribution of weight and quality of the product, and how much it angers my girlfriend when combined with unfunny zombie jokes. 5/5, would purchase again, unless my girlfriend sees this review.

This is the only Tomahawk on the market that I am aware of that is one solid piece of metal. I had bought another brand for my son that broke in what I would consider normal use. It is heavier than others however I am sure that it will last.
