This type of handle is a privacy handle where the lock works as basically a crude kind of obstruction to the handle. It's not a secure locking mechanism, but that's fine, it's a lot easier to install than a genuine bathroom lock since it requires a just a single tubular mortice latch (which are easy to get hold of for a couple of pounds), rather than a larger bathroom mortice lock. This is what I was looking for, to replace a very similar privacy handle which had broken. Unless you're replacing a similar privacy handle, the locking mechanism will need a second additional hole to be drilled through the door 4cm below the handle spindle, since the lock also has its own narrower spindle that goes right through the door. The handles on mine both had a bit of friction in the mechanism when they arrived, I put a bit of oil on the mechanism of each before installing them and they're much smoother. The spindle for the lock is too long and will need cutting down to the size of your door - it's steel so not the easiest, but 3 or 4 minutes with a hacksaw should do it. I wish the handles came with philips head screws and not flat head as they much easier to screw in, especially when you're creating new holes in the door. Based on the very similar handle it replaced, I imagine the handle will go a bit wobbly before too long as the mechanism is quite rudimentary, but no complaints at this price really, I would buy it again.

Why did you choose this product over others?: Looks good and its finish has lasted well. But the door handle spring is too aggressive, making the door a challenge to open for older users.

Very poorly made, the bar of the lock didn't line up straight through the door handle holes, must of been from poor casting, what I thought would of been a straight forward 5 minute job took me over 2 hours! And the lock is unusable, I tried everything that I could think of to install it thinking that it must of been me that made a mistake but after struggling for ages I realised it's totally down to p!ss poor manufacturing, I even tried to bend the bar slightly in a vice so that I could "dummy it up" so it looked complete but non functional and the bar made of cheap zinc alloy snapped. I ended up salvaging the old locking bar from my old broken door handle to "dummy it up" and attached the new cumbersome locking knob which I may add every time I open the door from the inside I bang/ rasp my knuckles off of it even drawing blood because of its sharp corners... Don't not waste your money on this product. It is absolutely junk!!!

These look great on the door, they do not appear to scratch easy which is a bonus. Be interesting to see how they age.
