Would it be suitable for low temperatures? Or should I layer jackets with the coat?

Yes very warm, I don't think you would need to layer it.

Will it be ok for skiing?

Yeah it will be but buy it 1-2 sizes bigger than what you wear cuz I bought it the size I wear and it was to small so I gave it to my sister and she says it is warm

Know the coat is not bulky. I love this jacket. It's light and it keeps you very very warm. You will not be sorry if you bought one.
