Wonderful book

Thought provoking, beautiful poetry on life.
This book is small, but powerful. The writing is poetic indeed, which can make it hard to read (I had to reread sentences constantly to understand). But it is WELL worth the effort. Beautiful writing. Beautiful concepts.

A Book for Every New Generation
โLet there be spaces in your togetherness, And let the winds of the heavens dance between you. Love one another but make not a bond of love: Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls. Fill each other's cup but drink not from one cup. Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf. Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone, Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music. Give your hearts, but not into each other's keeping. For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts. And stand together, yet not too near together: For the pillars of the temple stand apart, And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other's shadow.โ This quotation from the classic book by Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet, illustrates why these writings have been popular for so long. This reviewer remembers getting his first copy of the book in Boston during the early 1950's, when it was widely circulated among college students at the time, as well as young adults who were starting out in that decade. It had a fresh take on the institutions of life, and offered that generation a sense of breaking away from convention without being particularly radical. It was a way to be non-conforming, without departing too far from traditional values. This may explain why it surged in popularity in the 1960s, when the generation coming of age at that time had a new kind of permission to break away, yet have a sense of a valid value system at the same time. To read and talk about The Prophet became a quite "cool" thing to do. Gibran's work had been around for a long time, but it is the type of literature that has a way of being rediscovered as each new generation comes along. This is at least partially why it retains its popularity over so many years.

Itโs more than dรฉcor The Prophet isnโt meant to simply fill a spaceโitโs a contemplative piece. It invites reflection, intuition, and quiet listening. Many people feel a personal connection to it over time.
