A: It opens further (about 1 1/4") but about 1" would be the max I would try and clip with it.  And that is probably pushing it further than you should.

Not only are these excellent bag clips but they last a very long time. I've had the OXO clips for at least 10 years. The old ones work as well as the new one. Built very well. Can hold large bags and smaller bags very easily. A little more expensive than others but worth every penny. Please buy these. You won't regret it!
