Don't the layers shift out of place while sleeping/moving around?

Yes, that is a major problem. As the months have gone by the inserts have compressed and there is now more room in the pillow case for the inserts to shift around. I'm not happy with this pillow after just a few months of use. You are wise to raise this question.
