At over 6,000,000 points and I am still surprised by the Nazis
Originally bought this for my husband. Watched him play while sitting in the room working on something else. It was interesting how you can go anywhere and go after most options in any way you wish to do them. Depending on how difficult you set it up, it changes the way the Nazi's behave. I am not a huge video game fan, however, I started on Sniper Elite 3 and really enjoyed it. Then I finally bought this game on disk, so I could play it too as hubby was always playing in his free time. I have gotten to the Sniper Elite difficulty but decided not to go further because I didn't want to have to figure out how to aim without the aid of the little diamond and like seeing where the Nazis are on the little map. There is so much built into this game that it is one of my favorite video games ever. The first game I ever played was Pong. So I am old school. I like the games that allow you the freedom to shape your play in a way that fits you. My husband goes gangbusters into herds of Nazis and I like to kill them with head shots from a distance. I like to kill every single Nazi until there are none left and my husband just finishes the missions. Both of us are happy with the freedom. I actually like to play it when I am trying to relax after working or when my brain is too tired to study. San Celini is a nice introduction to the game. There are no snipers in that mission. Good one for distance sniping. The second mission (the Village) is more difficult. If you are not stealthy, the radio guy will call in the Jagers and you will have your hands full. You can hear the Nazis killing the Partisans in the background, so there is a sense of urgency. The visuals are stunning. Lots of the missions are near water. The quality of the water and waves is great. During night missions there are even bugs around the lights. During the Viaduct mission the scenery is lovely. I highly suggest you wear headphones on that one and some of the others because you hear crickets and birds, depending on where you are. I have all the extra missions too. You have to have those. The trophies are fun sometimes. You can even shoot out most of the lights, just for fun. Depending on the mission, you may wish to use generators as a sound masker or rig them so one of the Nazis will get blown up when they fiddle with it. I killed an officer just the other day by rigging the generator. You can choose what weapons and other devices you bring with you when you start. I am a fan of the silenced rifle ammo. Again, this is my favorite game. Everything is winnable. There are no missions that are too challenging. I would have rated God of War better if the last Valkyrie was not so hard to beat and there were a little more too it. I also liked the Lara Croft series of games but again, they have silly bosses that are just put in to make it difficult. The crazy difficult bosses actually detract from fully enjoying the game when you have to play a boss over and over again to get to the next location or level. I don't find that enjoyable. All around, for the reasons that I have mentioned, Sniper Elite is fun to play, as challenging as you desire it to be, and not distracted by levels that are too hard to beat. You can play it over and over again and still get surprised by the programming. You can change how you approach the missions every single time. The extras are awesome! Scenery is realistic. Movement of people is realistic, although not perfect. Bodies can end up quite contorted when they die or sometimes float above the ground. Aiming is very good, although yesterday, there was a lot of drift and the Nazis were jerking around a bit. Part of the design. It changes based on what level of difficulty you choose or if you customize the difficulty. If you are going to buy any video game for a first person shooter, I could not recommend this one more strongly. Just buy it. You will thank me. :-)

at 11,000,000 points and still playing
i agree with most of the reviews and most of the gameplay observations. i recommend playing first through all campaign levels at a middle difficulty so you can learn the maps, the hazards, the enemy positions and their reactions, then increase difficulty for replay. the maps are not "open world" (certainly not on the scale of "ghost recon wildlands") but are rather small, yet each level played tactically and with care not to die gloriously easily takes 2 hours or more to complete. the audio engineering, especially of weapons and explosions, is quite good. once you play "hardcore" you probably won't go back, as it is genuinely challenging to aim sniper shots beyond 100 meters. hardcore is stripped of aids like the HUD with all enemy locations, enemy alert posture and your health status, target distances, etc. and is much more treacherous; it's a rare achievement to play through the whole game at that level. ("hardcore plus" is simply "hardcore" with the "feature" that there are no autosaves, so if you die you start the whole level over.) some tips: * loadout the sniper rifle with silencer, the thompson MG, and the 1911 with silencer. the 1911 will kill with two quick shots every time, the thompson is easy to control; both can be used for near or medium range headshots. * there are frequent autosaves and manual saving is not really necessary in my experience, even at the "hardcore" level. * there are many, many ways to die, but the most common are: you forget to reload before changing position, you take on more than three nazis at once, you let your health slip below half -- one sniper shot will kill you. * trucks blow if you shoot the radiator grill and blow instantly if you shoot the gas tank. useful, especially when a truckload of reinforcements arrives; otherwise, amusing mayhem. * snipe from locations with limited approach routes, and set traps along access to deter attackers. (in hardcore, even with silencer ammo, one shot will alert nazis to your location.) * set up distance attacks from positions that require counterattackers to funnel -- for example, via bridges, narrow pathways, ladders or doorways. avoid locations with multiple routes to your position. * when discovered in the open or in bushes, retreat immediately and fast, then approach cautiously to your previous position. quite often three or four nazis will be standing around grousing at your last location, and a single grenade or machine gun attack will do good work. * don't shoot radiomen -- shoot their radio packs. you'll see! * the sound of approaching footsteps or voices is your final warning. my main complaint is that the audio cues used to signal your game status are initially hard to decipher. the sound of a truckload of cymbals going over a cliff is the all clear; you'll have to figure out the rest.

Excellent game with one exception (updated)
In my opinion, the best Sniper Elite so far with one exception... other than the primary sniper rifle, the other weapons (until you can upgrade them) are useless unless you get a headshot. All the AI's seem like supermen as I hit them with 10, 15, or 20 rounds before they die. I gave up shooting close in enemies preferring to melee them instead. Maybe when they make SE 5, they'll actually have local citizens on the streets and in homes and buildings to add another dimension to finding and taking out the enemy. As it is, aside from the cut scenes, a few partisans appear in two chapters in very negligent roles, otherwise the only other players are the enemy. I love the fact that you can melee from the front as well as from behind, huge improvement. Update... As of this writing, I finally achieved the rank of "Elite 100" but it took awhile . Along the way I learned a lot about this game and how to keep it interesting instead of repetitive. I'm pretty much hooked on playing it in the "Authentic Hardcore" level of difficulty because of the greater point totals for each kill/destruction. Of course the challenges are that you have very little help while playing through each mission. There is no "Hud" help, no target " Reticle " (red crosshair), there are no targets visible or distance to them, no weapon load, health indicators hud, you have to use the bumpers to select weapons and ammo type, no scope adjustments, no binocular adjustments, but you do get the "windage indicator" as your only help. The only difference between "Authentic Hardcore" and " Authentic Plus " is that you get all the target information after a kill ( distance, type..liver,headshot, etc. assisted, high ground, weapon type and more) Authentic Plus gives you nothing except point totals when you complete the mission. A good set of surround sound headphones will give you a good advantage because you can hear the enemies sneaking up behind you. Really need to be cautious and SAVE OFTEN!! You will find yourself in some real tough situations that you may not want to repeat over and over again, very frustrating. She upgrading weapons, it's best to do so in the "Cadet" level of difficulty as it will be much easier and faster. Since this is an "Open World" or Sandbox" type game, you can play it in many different ways attack from many different directions, and use a variety of weapons to help with each mission. There are small maps like "Bitanti Village" where all targets are less than 200m. Then there are large maps like the "Rigilino Viaduct" where the "Stone eagles" are nearly 800m away! After playing SE4 for some time now, I am pretty sure I've seen all the features, including near impossible shots, that "Rebellion" has to offer. What a great game. I'll keep playing it until hopefully they offer SE5!

Fun for the patient
Fun for the methodical player who likes to plan things out - if they don't get spotted and all hell breaks loose, that is. Which happens. You can complain about how enemies stop searching even with a growing pile of bodies around them but I suppose continued states of searching would change the character of the game. Doesn't it get repetitive? Maybe. But if you like sniping, you won't be too bored. Is "empty lung" mode too easy? Maybe, at least on normal difficulty, which is all I've tried so far. Tagged enemies show up as highlighted and you can snipe them sometimes even though you can't see them. I expect this to change on harder difficulties. There's a graphic kill cam you can dial up or down, showing the effects of your bullet. It ain't pretty. It's more disturbing if you pay attention to the snippets of info about the German soldiers you tag. Some are nasty ("takes no prisoners ") but some give you pause about shooting them ("saved an Allied soldier by removing shrapnel" or "thinks we (Nazis) shouldn't be bombing civilians"). Similarly, some of their conversations remind us of our shared humanity, such as their plaintive disappointment at not getting any mail again, missing their kids, their cries of grief at finding one of your victims, or their valiant attempts to carry their wounded to safety. There are enough reminders on the other side of the coin of some of their misguided loyalty to the Fuhrer ("why are they resisting? Can't they see what we're trying to accomplish?"), or how little Hans is getting great marksmanship scores, but still. All said, it feels great to be able to disable a tank by sniping their gunners and drivers, and to make a difficult long-distance shot, masking your shot with a sabotaged generator, or seeing your enemies encounter one of your traps. The scenery is great, too.

Fantastic game that should be in your library of games
Great game, everyone should get a copy and especially the Season Pass. The silenced rife (Deisle Carbine) is fun as heck. Bought the game for about 45 bucks and a week or two later, it dropped in price to 30. My bad luck. lol Game is worth 45 but wish I had waited and got it for 30. Game does have some bugs in it. Satchel charges will not appear on the bridge with the rail gun, vehicles will sometimes not have satchel charges on them (very rare). Driver slots that you can sniper thru to kill the drivers of armored vehicles are sometime missing. Can't kill the driver or gunner. Quick tip, if you can't use a satchel charge because it glitched away. Use TNT with a timer or some explosives from your inventory to destroy smaller armored vehicles. Adhesive grenades are not going to stop a tank but are great to use on a Nazi sentry. Your guns might not appear that you have purchased thru DLC. If this happens, switch to another game (digital game is easier) and switch back your Sniper Elite 4 game and the guns should be back. The Silent Pack is excellent. SPOILERS Poor shots will like this. You have to stop the plane from leaving the tarmac with the missile and going off to kill President Ike. The plane will take off and circle back. If you are a good shot and take out the engines, you win. If you are a poor shot, Ike will get killed by the missile and you will fail. Instead of going for the engines, TAG the plane with your binoculars, take out as many as the soldiers firing at you as you can. Save a health pack for lowering your heart rate. Shoot the missile under the plane and the plane blows up. Mission accomplished. Great game with plenty of replay value. You can play and save anywhere at anytime, wish all games had it.

Improved and Refined
If you have come this far with this franchise, you know what you're getting: a World War II sniper-stealth game that is as hard as you want it to be. Getting set up in a perch is half the fun, marking guards on the way and either doing a ghost run and passing them up or silently dispatching them with a takedown or silenced pistol round. Once you've reached a perch, there is usually a noise-making opportunity or diversion such as a generator or passing bomber planes that make for noise-masking opportunities. There is plenty of DLC to get into as well, ranging from skins and characters to whole missions. All in all, this is a great continuation of a unique stealth game.

Ok but seems a bit short and lacking cohesiveness in the solo campaign 3.5 stars
This is the third sniper related game I have gotten over the last year including this one, Sniper 3 Ghost Warrior and Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon. From those, I like Ghost Recon the best, Ghost Warrior the least and this one in between, although this one is slightly closer to the least end of that spectrum with Ghost Warrior. This starts with an interesting premise of being a Sniper behind the lines in WWII, but the story and cut scenes are pretty mediocre at best with some static scenes with a narrative talking over it and others short and basic, making it seem like a budget title. Considering you are a sniper, I was assuming that you are mostly going to be sneaking around and yes there is some of that, but it seems easy to be spotted and in a lot of cases, it is easier to shoot your way out of a spot that try to hide again and continue sniping. So instead of this being a sneaking assassin type shooter, this feels more like a shooter that you occasionally sneak around in. As far as I can tell in my early stages of the game that I am in you have no way to knock out enemies. There is a basic tutorial initially, but it really doesn’t give you much in terms of overall gameplay. I didn’t learn until midway through the game that you can sneak up and use a knife. The x-ray type perfect shots are an interesting feature of the game and a bit different in a sort of gruesome way. The enemies are pretty inconsistent. In one instance, hunting you down quickly no matter where you are, but on the other, they can’t figure out I am in a sniper tower, even after I shot from there. The levels seem decent size and takes a while to get through, but the missions are pretty similar each time and there are only a limited number of overall missions, making the game feel a bit short to me. Overall, there seems very little to do other than the main missions, you collect a few letters or some intel, but it is really inconsequential to the rest of the game. Also, if you do the main mission first, you cannot do the miscellaneous collecting or side missions. Of course that is assuming you know you are suppose to shoot eagle statues that are located in obscure places. I am glad you can manual save, because the auto-save feature stinks as it seems to save at inappropriate times, such as when you are caught and surrounded. The gameplay seems a bit clumsy and awkward at times and not as smooth as it should have been compared to other games. Graphically the game is ok, but still not as good as other titles. Navigating around the map is also a bit cumbersome as you cannot leap over certain things that look like you should, etc… The missions and side missions and collectables are not cohesive and feel a bit piece meal to the game. Maybe the multi-play is better and the reason people like the series, but I am primarily a solo campaign gamer and I think the game is ok, but not as good as some the reviews say. 3.5 stars
