It was a rumor which Synology shut down. You can use any drive you want. **Q: is the DS3617xsII good for transcoding and run a plex server ?** A: Yes, this model had an Intel Xeon CPU. This will easily handle transcoding of multiple 1080 or lower quality streams. 4K content should not be transcoded unless you have a proper GPU, and that can handle HDR color mapping. Been using this Synology for 1 month. The CPU barely reached 50 percent when transcoding, and stays under 20 percent when using direct play. No buffers, or other issues. Works great. Atom and ARM CPUs would normally struggle with Plex, which is why I chose to pay more for the Intel Xeon model. QNAP uses AMD CPU, but it is widely known QNAP suffers with severe security problems which has recently led to ransomware and other attacks on QNAP NAS units. QNAP recently instructed all owners to disconnect the NAS from the internet. **Q: How is it for transcoding video and 4k?** A: You do not transcode 4K and HDR content without a GPU capable of doing this. Plex clearly states this within their software. No CPU currently has ability to handle HDR color remapping.
