My daughter's all-time favorite
My partner was playing with our daughter one day and threw on some YouTube videos of people reading children's books in the background. When Edward the Emu came on my daughter's head shot around so fast and she fell in LOVE. I then had to buy the physical copy of this book and the sequel Edwina the Emu. They are her all time favorite books- and trust we have A LOT of books in this house. While I find the illustrations a little unsettling, she cannot get enough of them. The story's message of self-acceptance is one I can definitely get behind and anything she loves I'll love too.

Wonderful book - my go-to gift for kids!
This is one of my all-time favourite kids’ books. In fact, I have my own copy, and I always buy it for any children I’m getting gifts for. I think it’s great fun for kids age 2 through maybe even 8 or 9, with its rhyming story, “moral” that being yourself is usually best, and absolutely wonderful illustrations.

Love this book Easy rhythmic reading Witty Almost as good as Edwina the Emu! But a great companion prelude to Edwina!

A very good lesson for every child to learn
I discovered this book when my kids were young, and it was one of my favorite stories to read to them, and it was one of theirs too. They often got to take turns picking out a book to read before bedtime and this one made it to my lap many many times. Well, over the years, our copy grew tired and ragged and worn, as it traveled from vehicle to vehicle, from house to house, and from beds to toy boxes, to backpacks to bookshelves, somewhere along the way Edward the Emu must have snagged it back home to his zoo. Alas, I could not find it anywhere. All my kids are grown now, and one day as I was searching for something on Amazon, imagine my surprise when I saw none other than Edward the Emu in the search results! I hadn’t been searching specifically for Edward, but I couldn’t resist coming to say hello to an old friend either. Needless to say, I told myself (or else Edward did) that I needed another copy just to have around for nostalgia’s sake. After all, he told me… one day there may be more little ears to hear all about Edward. And so I did… after all, one can hardly resist Edward the Emu.

Not very useful
I bought this as part of our study unit about Australia. Kids wanted to learn about Australian animals. But it was not very useful at all, because the choice of animals depicted is random, from any continent and habitat (the story happens at the zoo), there was no real insight into Australia. No educational angle in this book. It would be much more useful a book such as “Have you seen my egg” in which the emu interacts with local endemic animals, it just adds an extra learning element that I personally find valuable. Returned.

Lovely story with a wonderful moral
Edward the Emu learns a valuable lesson about being himself. The text rhymes, making the canter fun to read. The illustrations are wonderful and the children love Edward's adventures in finding out that he is perfect just the way he is. I read this to my grade one students every year. The second book to this title is Edwina the Emu, also lovely, but the original is without a doubt the best.

Book Review
I absolutely loved this story as a child and rereading it as an adult made me fall in love with it even more. The illustrations are vibrant, the story is full of humour and heart, and the message about being yourself is timeless. Such a nostalgic and beautiful read that I can’t wait to share with my own children someday.
