For the price very good, reliable item
UPDATE Nov. 18, 2016: I ordered another two-pack of these based on liking the two I already have so much, and wanting these in a couple other rooms or perhaps for travel. They're handy when you need a flashlight for something, and reliable when our power goes out typically a couple times a year during storms. In fact I'm raising my review to 5 stars, for the price vs. value received these are outstanding. I hadn't realized it was 4 YEARS since my original purchase and those two units still function well. I see the old ones are slightly less bright than the new ones when I compare the beam side-by-side. One minor difference in the new ones: there is no silver reflector behind the front 3 LEDs. It's just a white "reflector" same color as the rest of the device. This casts a softer more diffused light when I compare on a white ceiling, but it's a minimal difference. There is still a silver reflector behind the 2 front LEDs. The new lights arrived fully charged as with the two I'd purchased in 2012. Original review: These units are less expensive than a couple of the competing emergency lights, one reason I purchased 2 of them. I received (on 8/7/12) model #71134 (without "CC" at the end, which is what was advertised here and that other reviewers mention). I don't know what the difference is with the "CC", but mine do seem to work well and have good illumination (there are only 2 or 3 LEDs, keep in mind) in the dark. Both had a charge when I received them. Both come on at power failure (tested in a power strip) with either the front light or the flashlight function as selected. There is no "night light" except a red LED (on all the time when plugged in) which would be an aid in finding the device in the dark but provides virtually no light on its own (the selected main light comes on of course if the power goes off or if you unplug the device). I opened one device up (4 Phillips screws) to check the battery type and there are 3 "AAA" batteries enclosed in a green plastic-wrapped pack (stamped "Ni-MH AAA 200mAh 3.6V"), which is soldered to the device circuit board (unfortunately.) So it will be possible to replace the batteries if needed, but it'll probably require some light soldering (or maybe my favorite, heaving taping!) of the wires to the battery pack. I hate throwing things like this away just because the batteries stop working. The good news is, they are labeled as Ni-MH, not Ni-Cad batteries, which should perform better. For the low price, this is a simple and effective emergency light that will help me find the door or the lanterns and other gear in an emergency or power outage.

Best Emergency Light for the Price
We live in a neighborhood where the power is always going out. I ordered four different plug-in emergency lights to try out, and this one was by far the best. It was the least expensive (under $10) and produced the brightest light. The biggest plus is that the light shines straight out, so it illuminates the floor/area where you are actually walking. All the others either aimed their light at the ceiling (not helpful, I'm not walking on the ceiling) or their output is so weak it's little more than a nightlight. I dumped all the other plug-in lights into the Goodwill bag and am just using the Slimline ones. It has produced light for several hours in past power failures. Fortunately the power hasn't gone out yet for an extended period of time, so I don't know the outer limits of its longevity, but for the average power outage of a few minutes to several hours, you will be fine. I ordered the original one January 2013 and it's still working great when the power goes out. An added bonus is the flashlight feature at the top of the unit. It's not terribly powerful, but good enough to light the way to the LED camping lanterns in the garage. I ordered several more for current use and to stockpile. Last time I found an emergency light this good (Intermatic PR3C Three-in-One Emergency Power Failure Light) they discontinued them. Don't take the chance! Buy now!

Grandma-Approved Product: Tech she can use!
Picked a couple of these up for my grandma, after she was stuck in a power outage and couldn't find her flashlight. She doesn't like anything new, hates changes, throws away all kinds of (neato!) safety stuff we get for her...so I hid one of these lights behind the TV and stuck one in the extra socket in the kitchen, and switched them so they'd come on in an outage. I mentioned them to her but told her just to ignore them, they were out of the way and would work when she needed them. We had a small storm about a week later, and she called to tell me that when the power flicked off for a minute, the Power Failure lights came on right away and gave enough light she didn't even need a flashlight to navigate the house. Definitely did what I wanted them to do; not sure how long they'll last, but for less than 10 bucks each, I don't really care if I have to replace them often. Grandma is happy and feels safer being by herself in bad weather, so 5 stars. My mom turned around and ordered 30 for the elderly folks at her church. The light is bright, flashlight feature worked, and I got brownie points with g-ma AND mom--SCORE. The metal power prongs slide in and out from the back of the light, and can be hard to plug in because when you push the light toward the outlet, the prongs sometimes start to slip back inside the light. Again, no problem for me, but wanted others to know.

Not perfect, but good enough as power failure light
As of me writing this review, there are four pictures for this light. The first is not as received. The other three show what I received. I ordered from Amazon.com directly, not one of the marketplace sellers. Neither the packaging nor the item itself shows the "CC" that is referred to in the description. It is simply model number 71134. It is made in China and listed as using 0.6 watts. The guide light (also stated as night light on packaging) is just a red LED that doesn't put out any ambient light, at least not enough to see by in the dark as a night light. It doesn't look red in the packaging, only when it is plugged in. For further info, I trust NLee the Engineer's review and recommend you read it and the others linked to it. I will elaborate more on the brightness of the unit compared with the Energizer NLee mentions in his review. Both the nightlight and full beam mode of the Energizer are brighter than either mode of the AmerTac, but I find the lantern mode (3-LED side mode) is overall brighter in that it covers a much larger area with diffused light. I expected to see three beams of light and a little area surrounding each, but what I saw was one soft, diffused light spreading out over the opposite side of the room which was surprising since the cover is crystal-clear plastic and not diffused. I was a little disappointed in the brightness, but it is easier to see throughout the room with this in lantern mode than with the Energizer reflecting light off the ceiling or floor (the Energizer only shines a beam up or down, not out into the room). So as a power-failure light, it puts the most light where you need it, which is into the room. Don't expect to be able to read by it, though, unless holding it in your hand. It also doesn't stick out from the wall as much as the Energizer. As a flashlight, it is barely better than the Globe mentioned in NLee's review, but good enough considering the dual purpose. I too would have preferred a nighlight mode, especially since I gave a few of these as gifts (and sure enough, someone said "it's not a nightlight"). I think these are best in bathrooms, kitchens and entryways which is why a nightlight would have been appreciated. Overall, based on the three different ones I have, I think this is the best value and usefulness, but the Energizer is better as a flashlight and the Globe has a sensored nightlight function, although it comes on in too bright a room (and don't forget the Globe model covers both outlets). The other items mentioned in the review are listed below. Energizer Weather Ready Compact Rechargeable LED Light Globe Electric 8420401 3 in 1 LED Night Light, White

This is great if the power goes out! Solves my problem for very low cost.
I did not buy this thing for it's use as a "flashlight". I bought it soley to give me enough light during an outage so that I can walk to and obtain my long term emergency lights that can run 30 days on 3 D cells. Installing it in an outlet was a breeze. It works. I will buy more of them. BACKGROUND: We had a 5 hour power outage recently that was a wakeup call. I came home to find my family had candles lit and placed throughout the house in sometimes questionable places that * they * thought were safe but I wasn't so sure. I decided after that to take steps towards a better solution including ordering this light and multiple long term (30 day) emergency lights. UPDATE Jan 10th, 2016 We had a power outage recently and these worked PERFECTLY. No panic or stumbling around in the dark. Gave us ample light to go by until we could find our emergency LED lanterns, candles, etc. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Second time ordering this light. Love the night light feature as well as brightness during power outage.

Work perfectly!
These little lights are the best! We live in an area with frequent power outages and only part of our house is on a generator. These plug in and turn on (either as a single-beam down/up light or 3-beam light. You also can unplug and use as a flashlight. I have probably 6 - 8 and none have failed.

Good When It Works Right
I ordered two. One was defective and the other was fine. When it works fine they are great. Bright, goodlooking and easy to use. The issue with the defective one is as follows, I hope you can track this because it contains a workaround in case you get a defective one. There is a sliding switch on the bottom of the light that when you slide it towards the rear of the light the two prongs slide out of the light to allow you to plug it in. The slide is supposed to slide out and engage a catch (detent) which engages and holds the prongs in the out position so it can be pushed into the plug socket. When you want the prongs back inside the light, you press down on the slide switch and slide it to the rear. Pressing down dis-engages the catch and allows the prongs to withdraw into the flashlight. On one of mine, the catch mechanism didn't catch and hold the prongs so as you pushed it into the socket the prongs were pressed back into the light instead of into the socket, so the light wouldn't hold in the socket. What I have to do with that one is to hold the slide switch with my finger or a dime or something so it is held in the extended position while pressing the prongs into the plug. So you can get it to work, it is just a nuisance. If the light isn't removed often it probably is not a big deal. But if you want to use it for a flashlight from time to time it will become an pain in the neck to keep holding the slide switch each time you hook it back up to the plug. I bought two, and one was defective, one was not. So that is about 50% reliability. I would probably have rated four stars except I had called the seller to ask for help and was asked to leave a message in a mailbox and I would be contacted within 24 hours or something. I never heard from them at all. I will say, if you get one that works properly, it is pretty nifty. Steve

If you're looking for a daily nightlight which has a power failure backup, look elsewhere....
I was disappointed to find out that the nightlight only works when it's unplugged. This light does not work as a nightlight when plugged in! The only thing that glows when it it plugged in and turned on Is the red indicator light. This light did not meet my needs.
