It works on my iPad Pro 12.9 5th Gen with iPadOS 16.3 - plug and play. OS 16.# added CAC reader capability to Safari.

Q: Which usb (a or c) do i need for my iphone 11 pro max?

Neither of these options work with an iPhone, because an iPhone has a lightning port, not a USB port. The Thursby TSS-PK7 Reader has a lightning connector and is typically bundled with the necessary software.

Q: I have a new macbook air with catalina. will i need software for this to work or is it already present?

I'm not a mac user but based on an answer to a related question, it should work natively with Catalina. It worked with my Win 10 system just by plugging it in. Good Luck!
