When putting this in my ac unit does the white side face out or the orange? Which side am I still supposed to be able to see ??

White side catches the air first then air travels through to the orange side. The sticky orange side is the last part the air goes through. The white side will get dirty first so you can see when it is time to replace the filter material.

Can this be used in a home hvac unit like a furnace filter?

It depends on they type of filter your furnace uses. If you have a basket filter then this might be a great alternative to cutting and installing those insanely itchy bulk rolls of fiberglass. Make sure there are no open gaps once you finish installing it, and, be sure the MERV rating is compatible with your system.

will this work in a hammock style HVAC filter?

This is simply cut to fit filter media so it should fit any frame as long as the size is right. Even the hammock style.
