NTSC/Region 0. Peter Gabriel is rightly famous for his innovative, entertaining and groundbreaking music videos. Over the years he has been at the forefront of using new technology and techniques to create stunning visual accompaniments to his music. Originally released in 2004, Play is a compilation of these classic promotional videos. For the majority of the songs the videos included are the originals but Games Without Frontiers has been reworked and there are new videos for 'In Your Eyes', 'Solsbury Hill' and 'Washing Of The Water' for which no original videos were created. The DVD also features specially created 5.1 mixes by Daniel Lanois which are unique to this collection. This release brings together Peter Gabriel's greatest hits in all their audio and visual glory. Review: ***** TRIPPY AUDIO/VISUAL SMORGASBORD ***** - Yes, that's five stars for extra trippy mind candy! Turn off the sound and watch just video (and slow it down/speed it up)...or just listen to the music alone: mono perception is stimulating enough, but now combine the two for binocular melding. These creations are cool and freaky generally, but some like Sledgehammer, Big Time, Kiss That Frog, Steam, The Barry Williams Show, Solsbury Hill, Digging The Dirt (I could go on) are artistic, intelligent and powerful juggernauts - relentless and overwhelming! Many of these are quite sexy with the gorgeous females and some of the other less trippy videos are often heavy emotionally. It is funny to me how consistent his style has been over the years...although some might feel that detracts, he owns his trademark sound and no one else touches it (listen to Tony Levin's bass on many of these!). Some of the videos are from 25 years ago, but seem very forward thinking and advanced. of course some of the computer generated effects look a bit dated, but that is to be expected - they are still exceptional and ground-breaking for their time. It takes a good long while to get through this whole dvd, which we all know is a plus if the material flows. I want to point out that I am watching on a huge projected hd screen with dts surround. It does make all the difference with music and videos like this. The extras are also very entertaining with a couple of extra videos, trailers and family (of Peter's) get to know you segments. I was always something of a Genesis fan (though I focused more on Yes, King Crimson, Floyd, Gong, Jethro Tull, Moody Blues, etc. back in the 70's), and Peter Gabriel's Genesis is my favorite since he was such a force in that great band (to put my view in perspective). Many songs later and glimpses of future Gabriel videos over the years confirmed in my mind that this guy is a scary (in a good way), maniacal human kaleidescope - and a fascinating one at that. One of the great musical forces of our time. Watch these videos closely and be in amazement...THIS IS MIND CANDY THAT DOESN"T FESTER AND ROT THE MENTAL TEETH! Thanks Peter for the many, many musical gifts of your long and incredible career. Enjoy without MTV in tow (a heavy and annoying burden these days), and watch at will with this well made dvd in your collection. Review: Amazing 5.1 - Fantastic 5.1 surround remixed and very active. This will blow you away! It has a program feature to create a set list. Only problem, the menus aren't intuitive and you have to always reselect the sound mix.

Only listening to Peter Gabriel is like being blind...
A Peter Gabriel collection limited to his albums only reveals half of his artistry. As his fans know, he is a stellar visual artist, and "plays" in all media. That's why I was so thrilled to receive PLAY, a compilation of his greatest music videos. For the uninitiated, a word of warning. You might expect to see some of Peter Gabriel's videos at Movie-Nite at the sanitarium. His pop is unapologetically edgy, often times his videos draw on exotic parts of his imagination to match his music. I tend to like his 80's videos best, but its all here and some of it is certain to satisfy any taste, from his 70's video, Modern Love, where he looks like Ashton Kutcher -- to his recent and stirringly sentimental tribute to his father. Even in those videos that I find overwhelming, I still respect his courageous artistic decisions.. for that is Peter Gabriel for you. This DVD is better than most other music video DVDs because it features a custom programmability mode that allows you to play your own mix of songs. The menus and trance-inducing bumper music are also well done, and there are trailers from some of his concerts and a live stage performance of Games Without Frontiers included. However, where it falters slightly is that I couldn't get the English subtitles wouldn't come up for me in some videos (so I could follow along with the lyrics, if you've ever questioned what some of them were.) Also, it could've been made much better by including commentary from Peter Gabriel himself, where he explains just what he was thinking when he designed the video in the way that he did. Definately a solid purchase, and a must have for every Peter Gabriel fan to enjoy the full diversity of his talents.

Incredible Entertainment Value
I debated picking this DVD up for a month or so but went for it and am sure glad I did. The sound is superb and the video eyepoppingly great. A nice feature is being able to watch the videos with or without 'introductions' which consists of a brief display of the album cover the song is from and usually a short interview or comment about the songs conception from PG. You can also program the DVD from the main menu to play selected cuts in the order you prefer. It was nice seeing some old favorites as well as many videos that were new to me. 'Lovetown' is great and has been sticking in my mind for days. The extras are good too... a live version of 'Games Without Frontiers', the vintage 'Modern Love' (which I had not seen before) and some trailers from PG's other DVDs. All in all a great collection of timeless audio-visual art. The 5.1 or DTS audio portion alone of this collection is well worth the cost. Excellent entertainment value to be sure.

Long awaited magic - Finally here!
This DVD is already ordered - I ordered two! All the Peter Gabriel videos, not just Sledgehammer and Big Time, all together, soon to be hitting my DVD player? Too Good To Be True. BUT, it is. Now, let me tell you about Modern Love. The video was made before videos were on MTV, before VH1. It was made as a promo for ths song from his first solo album. True I am a fan, and I have a fairly visceral response to this video, but it is not only a lot of writhing young man on the screen, but a lot of humor and satire too. So funny - and yet, there is the raw Peter Gabriel, young as can be, before Big Time, before Sledgehammer, selling that song like nobody's business. The man still sells it, if you have been lucky to see him on the last tour that just ended after two years. (Was I lucky? Saw him three times in the last two years, so, moderately lucky!). DO NOT MISS THIS DVD. TELL ALL YOUR FRIENDS. Get this for your family's Christmas Presents! Buy an extra just in case you lend one out! Order now! Order now! Order now! This is not a subliminal message. This is as liminal as I can get. You will not regret it!

Not what I hoped for
This is a weird collection. My primary interest were getting these tracks in 5.1. These sound more like Quad than 5.1. The bass frequencies on all tracks are gone. My subwoofer barely put out any sound. The high end is rolled off too. It’s very flat overall. You can tell that a lot of recording tracks went missing. There’s a lot of re-recording here. Lots of Peter’s vocals are re-recorded. That’s no surprise. He’s re-recorded most of his vocals for every live recording he’s released. He hates his live vocals. These tracks highlight why you should always leave your 5.1 mixes to Steven Wilson. He always makes sure that the iconic parts of the original mix remain. That’s not true here. It’s like the engineer wasn’t familiar with the originals, which of course can’t be true. I’m not how they took out all the excitement out of the mix, but they mostly did. It’s also weird that when I put my AV receiver into Stereo, it stays in quad. I’ve never seen that with any discs. No matter what DSP mode I switch to, it remains quadish. For those who understand this, I get a better surround experience with the original stereo mixes and putting the AV into surround. It shouldn’t be like that. If this was great 5.1, it would be only every Surround fan’s list. It’s not. Now I know why. Peter did such a wonderful job with the new release in Atmos. Hard to see how he messed this up.

SURROUND!!!
I must admit I am not much of a music video person. I would rather watch an entire concert performance or hear the songs in context of an entire album. As far as PG is concerned, his first four albums are his best besides his work with Genesis of course. But since these albums have not been released in surround, I am anxious to hear the tracks from these albums in surround. Unfortunately, this is the only way we can hear them so far!

Awesome new mixes in surround sound
Awesome collection. If you're a Peter Gabriel, this is a must have, as most of the songs have been substantially remixed (including use of some new overdubs or previously unused instrumental and vocal elements). These simply don't sound like the songs you've heard on the albums or in the MTV videos. The use of 5.1 surround sound is excellent, but this isn't the typical use of a surround sound mix. Rather, PG (with Daniel Lanois) has gone back and developed new mixes of these songs. Nearly every song is some kind of "alternate version" from what you may know on the album versions of these songs. Just a stunning new way of hearing these songs that you've loved for years. You might even discover a few songs that you'd overlooked (such as the effecting ballad that opens the collection..."Father, Son").
