Review: 4-Qt is perfect for making stove top popcorn - The 4-Quart saucepot with double handles is lightweight and perfect for making popcorn on the stove top which is how I remember my mother making popcorn for the family. With so many reports of microwave popcorn being unhealthy my doctor suggested stove top popcorn as a healthy snack without the chemicals so I went on a search to find a light weight cook pot that would allow me (a senior with arthritic hands) to be able to lift and shake the pot while cooking to distribute the kernels as they pop. I was pleased to find this lightweight Farberware Classic 4-Quart pot at a reasonable price. It performs well and brings back a little nostalgia while making stove top popcorn.
Review: Big And Long Term Fan Of Farberware Pots And Pans! - I just bought this set to replace one I bought in the early 1970's that I had to leave behind in a move. In addition to this set I also bought a couple of extra 3 quart sauce pans because they are so handy to have extras of. One thing I want to mention is that with time, going through the dishwasher had a bad effect on the handle material of the original set. They turned dull and rough so if that would bother you, you might want to hand wash just in case this newer version is still made using the same handle material. I will write to Farberware and ask them about this. Now let's talk about the design changes made to the bottoms over the years: Here, my 1970's ones were made with a solid layer of aluminum. With many trips through the dishwasher this degraded badly but they were still in use when I left them behind in my move this year. Anything printed into the aluminum had long since dissolved though. About maybe 25 years ago I bought a couple of extra 3 quart saucepans (such a handy size and I recommend you do the same!). The bottoms on these were finished with about an 1/8" raised laminated layer of shiny (stainless?) steel over the aluminum (the edge of which was slightly exposed). Over time one of these left my household in a divorce but the remaining one developed a gap between the steel and the aluminum on one side of the edge. Not sure if this was from the dishwasher/aluminum thing and can only speak for the single pan. This latest set has a gorgeous steel bottom design with no visible aluminum. I think there is still an aluminum layer in there though. The steel smoothly curves up to meet the body of the pan with a thin line around the edge. Lovely! Even the two included non-stick skillets have these bottoms. More about the skillets is that they are deeper and have more steeply sloped sides than I expected or am used to. The depth is about 2" and the rims are the 8" and 10" but the inside bottoms are maybe 2" less than this. The profile of the bottoms is very curved. So they will be better for saucier dishes but not so great for flipping pancakes. They are beautiful to look at. I know that non-stick has fallen out of favor but I still like it, am aware there are chemicals involved, that care must be taken with keeping the temperatures low, and have no problem with adding a little cooking oil. I am gentle with NS and my last (inexpensive) ones were still in use after 25 + years.
