Not sure about weight but I have mine full of clothes and no problems. It was by far the best investment I have ever made.

Yes, each bar can be expanded to your length of choice. Though I did not configure mine in the way you suggest, you present a very clever idea.My husband bought mine for me to get my excess clothing off the doors around the house.
