## Description

Catit Design SmartSift is an automatic cat litter box, sifting system that takes the chore out of litter maintenance. Simple yet innovative, SmartSift's litter sifting design does the scooping for you, so you can say goodbye to your cat litter scooper. To refresh the self-cleaning cat litter box, all you have to do is pull the lever; it's that simple! The lever activates an automated and noiseless pull-and-refresh process that quickly and efficiently refreshes the litter pan, while collecting waste in a bag. Clean litter is recycled back into the pan and waste clumps are deposited in a collection bin with cat litter liners for easy disposal. Replenishing the litter is also easy, simply open the maintenance access door on the cat litter box with lid and add as needed. SmartSift is a large cat litter box with a safe manual system, with no motorized pieces that can heat up or fail over time and no expensive electronic parts to replace. This feature is quiet and safe, making it very kitty friendly. SmartSift's sealed design prevents tracking and controls dust, which helps keep your home cat litter dust free. Additionally, it comes with an integrated cat litter deodorizer carbon filter to absorb odors inside the pan. Features include: Safe and quiet process, a sealed cat litter enclosure design that minimizes tracking and provides privacy, integrated carbon filter cat litter pad that absorbs odors, a large swinging door that allows cats to enter and exit easily, clear-view access window that allows easy monitoring of litter, pullout waste bin collects waste clumps for easy disposal in cat litter bags, a maintenance access door that allows you to easily replenish litter, and includes one liner for the cat pan as well as one for the pullout waste bin. Review: Many choices for auto kitty boxes but this one is the one! - Okay, here we go - honest report for all you cat lovers. We got this unit a weeks back. We researched ALL the different ones out there, agonized over which one to decide to purchase and finally settled on this one. Other automatic units were higher priced, all having quite a maintenance expense whether the litter itself or other supplies, mechanical/electric components that could/would fail, mechanisms that would need maintenance fairly often. Not good! We decided to purchase this one because the price was right, not many moving parts to fail over the long run, could use the normal clumping litter, and bags if used seemed reasonably priced. So now we have used this for some weeks now and the evaluation is this: It is a rather large unit so be prepared for that. I sprayed the unit completely including sifting grill within the unit with "never wet" or whatever they call it from Rust-oleum which works like a charm. You can use bags on the upper section and lower drawer and once we have used it for awhile decided that we only needed the drawer bag. Doing that made it is so easy to clean up and we were willing to pay for them because of that and they are not that expensive if you buy them in bulk. You will not want to overfill with kitty litter but if you do, no harm since first time cleaning, the extra litter just gets dumped into the drawer and you learn your lesson. Always move the cleaning handle very slowly and you will have no issues. The only issue we ran into in dumping the waste into the bottom drawer was if the waste is a narrow strip, it sometimes sticks between the grill sifter vanes - don't do anything, just let it sit there and it gets put back into the kitty litter after cleaning cycle. Most the time after a few cleanings, it gets dumped eventually anyhow. If you try to dislodge it (and if you don't mess with it, it always returns to the recycled litter after cleaning cycle), sometimes you inadvertently push it into the holding bin for the litter during the cleaning cycle and that is a pain in the a** to clean. Just leave it to recycle and it eventually will get dumped into the waste drawer. We have two cats, one about 10LB and the other 18lbs. It is small for the big cat but the 10lb cat has plenty of space. We have not trained the cats to use the swinging door so we left it off. Your cat may be different. However, so easy to clean that most of the time we just walk by it and use the cleaning cycle since it is so easy and therefore smell is not any issue. The cats love the clean litter all the time, too. Both my cats are diggers so I have no issues with urine on the sides though I believe the "never wet" would take care of that pretty easily but can't attest to leaking down in the unit of the urine since that doesn't happen. The one issue I have found is after a while using the cleaning cycle multiple times and if the cats go in the same place all the time, the waste occasionally gets dumped in the drawer on top of each other and while there is space still left in the drawer, a hill forms that must be spread around to empty spaces in the drawer. I have a wooden stick basically next to the unit to push the waste to an empty spot in the drawer so I can finish the cleaning cycle. To me: Big Deal!! small price to pay for a unit that does what it is suppose to do, fairly inexpensive and supplies fairly inexpensive, very easy to clean using the drawer bag, cuts down on the smells, the cats love it, no electronic parts or motors to fail in the future, no special litter or hook up - What more could you ask for except having someone else to do it for you. Hope this helps you to make the decision. Durability is yet to be determined since we have had it only a few weeks but the only thing I could see going bad is the cleaning handle breaking and using it slowly (which you should do anyhow to clean properly) is going to take care of that possible issue as far as I am concerned
Review: Horrible. I suggest you take your money elsewhere - This seemed like a great idea. I wanted to be able to quickly handle the litterbox and minimize my actual touching of used litter (because, be honest, that's gross). Unfortunately, this litterbox was problematic from the start. First, is the size. I mean, it's huge. Huge. I don't know where a cat owner is expected to keep such a monstrosity but it won't fit under the bathroom sink, or most anywhere else for that matter. Ok, so I have to have it in a closet that I now have to leave open all the time. If that was the only problem, I could have lived with it; but it wasn't. I'm so sick of these products that you buy and then in order to keep using you have to buy more products (I'm talking about the liners). On top of that, these liners are crap. The litter gets caught in the folds when you rotate to sift, so how the hell is that supposed to work?? I had to be reaching in and shaking lose the litter; remember how I said I wanted to minimize my actual touching of the litter? Yeah, didn't happen; instead I am touching it more directly than just with a scooper. So, I thought that maybe the think could work without the liner for the actual litterbox part. And it does; partially. The litter will be sifted and the poop will fall into the bottom. But the urine sticks to the litterbox, so you have to scoop it loose to get it to fall in the bottom. What's the point of a litter sifting cat pan that still needs scooped? Again, possibly something I could work around, but now I'm getting frustrated. This is three strikes, but I'm gonna try anyway because the d*mn thing cost a good bit. So what was the last straw? When my cat, in distress, had to pee on the floor because the handle-hook that's supposed to keep the litterbox locked in place had gotten loose during use so the litterbox swing up a bit during the last cat use, blocking the door, preventing the kitty from being able to get inside. Oh, and icing on the cake, the thing does nothing for odors. Nothing. Not a thing. There's so much space between the sides of the clear flap and the wall that plenty of odor can get out. And if you're thinking 'I can sift the used litter into the bottom drawer and only change it every other day' or anything along those lines; you'll need a ton of febreeze or scented candles because that drawer has absolutely no odor stopping power at all. So I've detailed my experience. I have two kitties and they're really great about switching to new types of litter boxes, never having mistakes on the floor. So when my kitty had to pee on the floor (happened while I was witness) and was in such distress about doing it, I was done with this thing when I realized it was because the litterbox essentially locked them out.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Do you have to use there bags or can you use like a plastic target or walmart bag?**
A: I use standard 13 gallon kitchen trash bags in the bottom drawer and no linertia in the top at all. Of course I also use small crystal litter which doesn't stick to the plastic as bad as clumping would (if you do this, you'll want to add a strip of duckt tape along the front edge of the part that faces downward when you raise the handle--that is designed to allow some litter to drop down into the bottom tray to help with odor control, but with fine grains, you loose A LOT of litter unless you tape it). Best labor saver I've ever had though, and I've tried all the robotic boxes except the genie and the litter robot.

**Q: Can i know how big is it? If it will fit a Maine Coon.**
A: I have a 8 lb. tabby and a 14 lb. tabby/Maine coon mix. It is just a tad small for our maine coon, but he seems to do okay in it. I've had this box for about a week and he's been using it fine. However, I don't believe a full-bred Maine coon would fit at all.

**Q: Can "crystal" cat litter be used? I've never understood if crystals are considered to be clumping litter, but it's all we've ever used. This seems like a great litter box, but I'd hate to switch our 15-year old kitty to a completely different kind of litter.**
A: Yes, I use Petco’s SoPhresh Odor Lock crystal litter in this box and it works really well as long as I don’t try to sift the box right after my cats have peed in it— you need to give the litter a little time to absorb it. It’s nice not having to dislodge clumping litter from the sifting grate like I did when I used clumping clay. I have two cats and find I need to change out the litter every two weeks.

**Q: Why to huge huge price difference between buying one and buying two?**
A: On the Catit website as of 4/7/2021 this product is $99.99.
You can also purchase Recycled WOOD cat litter to work with this. Yay!! No more nasty particles in your cat's feet that he or she has to eat to clean off!

### ⭐ Horrible. I suggest you take your money elsewhere

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Almost Perfect with Crystal Litter, needs a slight adjustment to fix locking mechanism - Worth It!
*by C***. on June 5, 2018*

UPDATE: STAR ADDED. I would actually go 4.5 stars on this. The solution to the lack of locking lever was simple, I took a pair of kitchen shears and cut off the offending extra blob on the handle portion. Took 15 seconds and it worked perfectly from then on. More Update: Kitty litter worked okay, definitely not with the liners though. We switched over to crystals and this thing is the best litter box so far out of the two motorized ones we've tried and all of the various non motorized, self sifting, non sifting litter boxes. We've been on the hunt for over 2 years now. The bulk crystals are $20 for two portions. Each portion fits this litter box perfectly. You can operate it extremely quickly with the crystals as opposed to regular litter and it all goes where its supposed to go. The crystals with the constant sifting (i do it, kind of for the satisfaction of how easy it is at least once a day) are going strong. 3 weeks and still going with 2 cats! The crystals are not saturated at all yet. I bet I get another week. That's $10 a month if we make it. Excellent. I do empty the poo tray (no liner in this either as it just makes it harder to dump) every few days. The poo is really desiccated and hard because of the crystals. So why only 4.5 stars? 1. very small poo chunks get caught in the grill and don't drop down. Now i do not mean to say that they get smushed into the grill and make a mess. NO, not with the crystals. they just get temporarily wedged with all the weight of the crystals pushing on them as the crystals slide into the transit receptacle and then the tiny poo chunks dont drop down, you can work it back and forth a little more intensely and get most of these to drop too though. But they dont get stuck they all come back out when the crystals slide out again. VERY minor problem. We're talking really small bits here. 2nd issue is also very minor, the tracking is a little worse than the Top entrance mechanized kitty litter tray (the one with the pre-made crystal litter trays) which had the best anti-tracking of any i've used. The SmartSift's door works better than all of the other hinged door litter trays we tried but it is not quite as effective at stopping tracking as the top entrance door. Shrug. its still good anti-tracking, the second best we've tried, just not first place. Anyway I can now fully endorse the SmartSift for all user types. ARCHIVE REVIEW: Excellent concept, one of the best, BUT BUT BUT, the locking tab that locks the lever in place and thus locks the the hole litter box in place and stops it from swinging is not manufactured correctly. Its a mi-shapen blob that will not let the handle lock onto to it no matter what you try. Clearly this is a common quality assurance issue. Otherwise its extremely ingenious. Definitely a bit light on the cat litter however. AND still need to use an oil spray because the liners are thin, our cats claw right through it and urine and whatnot seeps under the liner and gets stuck there (forming a cement bond onto the plastic) and so doesnt sift which defeats the whole purpose. So best to spray it and take off the liner. Now if I can just find a way to jury rig this lock we will be in business. Our small cat swung and deposited himself into the lower tray and got a little stuck. The bigger issue is thats where all the poop is.
