Is the activity based on step counting (like fitbit) or GPS?

Its based on sensor movement like the Fitbit as far as i am aware. It links to your mobile phone GPS, but you would need your phone with you for this. Alone its just sensors. Seems accurate enough. The next model up from this has built in stand alone GPS but this is also 3 times as expensive.

Are incoming calls instantly shown on screen with vibration & sound? Or they are shown afterwards just as a notification?
