Vow of Thieves (Dance of Thieves, 2)

If I could give this book 10 stars, I would!! It was so cute and such a perfect ending to the series. This is book two in the Dance of Thieves duology, and I loved it so much! I absolutely love the character. The dynamic between Kazi and Jase is super sweet, and I loved following their journey and seeing how everything unfolded. The tropes are rivals/enemies to allies to lovers, with forced proximity and found family woven in, which Is my absolute favorite. There was so much action and so many plot twists that it kept me on edge the entire time! It was so intriguing and addicting that I finished the book in less than 3 days… I also really love Pearson’s writing style—it’s so eloquent, and the added touch of Kazi’s riddles made the story even more special. The ending wrapped everything up beautifully and closed out the story in the most satisfying way. It definitely brought a few tears, and honestly, the only thing that would make it better is another book 😂 Overall, I would definitely recommend this 100% to anyone looking for a good romantasy where the romance isn’t the central plot. It does have the perfect hint of romance sprinkled throughout the storyline, but it is balanced really well with action and plot. I actually read this duology first without realizing there were other books that came before it. Even though I skipped an entire series that takes place earlier in the timeline, I was still able to fully understand what was going on.I am definitely going back to read The Remnant Chronicles. I love this book so, SO much I already want to re-read it!

I've been looking forward to Vow of Thieves since finishing Dance of Thieves in 2018. I wasn't approved for a review copy of Vow of Thieves and this really contributed to how long it took for me to get my hands on this book. Review books take priority for me, so I absolutely love when my review books and books I've been stalking align. However, that wasn't meant to be for this one. And the more time goes by, the less I remember about the details of the prior book. So it took me much longer than I hoped to feel like I knew what was going on. Or at least to remember who characters were from the first book. I say it all the time, but my favorite part of reading books is the relationships. Mostly the romantic relationships. And the plot and all of that good stuff take a backseat for me, although I do hope that's good too. So when Kazi and Jase were separated early on in Vow of Thieves, I was a little disappointed. Although, this did produce the anticipation of their reunion. I just love their relationship though. I loved how Vow of Thieves felt like it had an entirely new plot from book 1, yet all of the pieces of Vow of Thieves were set up in Dance of Thieves. Plots like these impress me so much. I appreciate when all of the pieces fit together in a way that shows a cohesive plan from the beginning. The side characters of this series are some of my favorites. Mary E Pearson does a great job getting you to care about characters that may have the smallest roles. Even some of the characters we once hated are written in a way that you can end up rooting for them. And on top of all of that, I want to know more about these characters. Wren, Synove & Mason, and Paxton and Priya. I need to know what lies ahead for them. Favorite quote: -I’m sorry. An apology from Death? Now I knew. Worse things than dying still lay ahead for me. Vow of Thieves was a great wrap up to the duology. I love the characters. I love their relationships. I want more. The plot was great. I really can't say that I had any complaints. The Dance of Thieves books both kept me turning [virtual] pages long into the night. I knew from my past adventures with her novels that I’d enjoy reading them, but these two books are stand outs in the author’s canon, in my opinion. Kazi is a strong heroine, powerful because of and in spite of the wretchedness of her past. She’s in need of no man To prove her worth. She has a single-minded drive to fulfill her mission, and needs no one even while she relishes the close bond she shares with her two comrades in arms. When she finds herself literally shackled to an alpha male, her contempt is understandable. But unbeknownst to her, Kazi has met her match in Jase; he will become her other half, yin to her yang. His past is the polar opposite of hers: he is surrounded by family, who support him in his new role as the latest in a long line of dynastic rulers determined to protect and further his family’s interests and his late father’s legacy. The world the author weaves is a broken one. The long-ago, almost fairy-tale-like Before world of skyscrapers and air travel and traffic jams has been obliterated by the Stars that fell from the sky, and what the reader assumes is the nuclear devastation that followed, irreparably altering the After. One of Jase’s ancestors, a young teenager at the time directly after the world changed, left a written record of the desperate struggle he and his small group of children lived through in order to build a new community of order and hope. Although very little of the narrative involves this struggle, it underpins and defines the Thieves world. I heartily recommend this novel and the one before it; readers will be caught up in this storyteller’s tale, lose themselves in the world she creates, appreciate her mastery of the written word, and, ultimately, relish every moment spent reading her books.

When I bought the first book, I didn't realize it was part of a duology. The book came in smooth, pristine condition. The first book was amazing, so I have nothing but high expectations for this one!

This duology has earned itself a place among my favorite series of all time! I'm trying very hard not to spoil anything, so this will be a short review. Just trust me, these books are awesome! Kazi and Jase were amazing together, and as individual characters. They both grew so much. Their determination, loyalty, and strength in the face of adversity kept me rooting for them until the end. I thought the villain and side characters were strong too, contributing a lot to the story and world. The action in this book was turned up a notch, and the stakes were higher than ever. There were scenes when I was holding my breath, waiting to see what would happen next. The writing and worldbuilding were some of my favorite things about Dance of Thieves, and they were just as good here. I absolutely recommend the Dance of Thieves duology to anyone who loves YA epic fantasy! *Though this duology can be read on its own, I do think you'll get more out of these books if you read The Remnant Chronicles first. I adored book 1 and dove into this one right after without hesitation, seeing as it was also on Kindle Unlimited. It picks up shortly after the end of book 1 with that cliffhanger demanding the reader to find out what Jalaine's message meant. It starts off slow and steady for the first 40 pages or so with Kazi and Jase traveling back to Tor's Watch from Vendan, until they reach the town and all hell breaks loose. Jase and Kazi get separated, both terribly injured. Not only their lives hang in the balance, but also those of Jase's family and every resident of Tor's Watch because a mysterious army has blasted their way in and taken the town hostage. While the story continued to be an engrossing page-turner, Kazi's plan felt overly drawn out and over-complicated compared to her normal ways. There also seemed to be some confusion as to how long Beaufort had been working with the Bellenger family because the number of years changed from the 1st book and in the mentions of it a couple times in this book too. It was a very enjoyable second book with twist and turns a plenty, action-packed, political intrigue, and enough romance to fill your heart with joy. But in my opinion, book 1 was better.

Vow of Thieves is the sequel to Dance of Thieves and is best read in order. Both of these books come after the events in The Remnant Chronicles. Kazi and Jase have just secured the promise of the King and Queen to make Tor’s Watch an official kingdom, and they couldn’t be happier. However, there are still many displeased people who are trying to gain control of Tor’s Watch, and they have taken advantage of Kazi and Jase’s absence to take over by force, killing many people in the process. Kazi has been taken prisoner, and Jase is fighting for his life while hidden in the settlement. When they are finally able to, Kazi and Jase continue to fight and find ways to take back their kingdom, though they are separated. Will they prevail and save the Ballengers’ legacy and home, or will all be lost to the usurpers? I loved and enjoyed this book very much (just like Dance of Thieves). The kind of fantasy that includes political intrigue, fighting for kingdoms, and fantastic character development is my favorite kind, and I believe this series qualifies. The rich detail and realistic characters were captivating, and the emotional impact on me was great as well. I felt stirred to battle myself, and I couldn’t put the book down. I am sad because the series has ended, but also excited to read what the author has next. I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys well written fantasy. Reading a book that culminates 5 years of reading is always terrifying. A lot is riding on it. Expectations are high and so are emotions. That is why I was scared to read Vow of Thieves, but I was wrong to be. It was exactly what this story needed and my favorite book by Mary Pearson. Vow of Thieves picks up where Dance of Thieves left off. Jase and Kazi are making their way back to Jase’s home, Tor’s Watch, but things have changed. The two of them are violently attacked and everything they thought they knew is different. Instead of settling in and making the plans the made happen, they find themselves in a situation where trust means everything and deciding who to trust could mean life or death. They have vowed to do whatever it takes to protect Tor’s Watch and the people they love and they will do just that, even if it means losing everything. Jase and Kazi are the backbone of Vow of Thieves. They make the tough choices and do the hard things and I love that about them. Everyone loves that about them. But what I want to really talk about is how Pearson creates the heart and soul of the story with her secondary characters. The Ballengers, Wren, Synové, and the characters from the Remnant Chronicles that make appearances, those are the people that add life and love and even more color to the strength of Jase and Kazi and who bring them to life and show what they are made of. It is them they fight for or with and that is what makes Mary’s books so special to me. Everyone is going to remember the main characters but is a talent that makes readers remember the secondary ones and want to know more about their stories. I mean I’m still begging for a book about 2 people in The Remnant Chronicles and I will be begging for books about people in The Dance of Thieves duology. So, how would I describe Vow of Thieves? Amazing, fantastic, epic, Mary Pearson’s best book to date; that’s how I would describe it. Since 2014 I have been wrapped up in this world that Pearson created, starting with The Kiss of Deception, and she finished it off perfectly with the final part of Jase and Kazi’s story. Add this to your TBR. You won’t regret it.

The story itself is very fascinating and I love the writing style. About the condition it was recieved in, there were no cornered pages. It was recieved perfectly crisp. And good quality.

Even better than the last one!! What a great end to the series and there was no messing about, picks up right where it finished off 🫶
