The outside is a hard plastic and the inside is actually a soft velvety material that helps prevent your knives from being scratched while in the case! Hope this helps!

What size knives do these fit

you have all lengths . but the blade can be no wider than about 1 in. i use them mainly for some of my fillet knives that didnt have a sheath to them. love the product. nice and snug fit.

Do these sheaths open at the top or the end?

The open at both ends. But if you buy all 6 pieces, there will be a sheath to fit all of your knives without the points sticking out of the end. And if for some reason you have an extra long knife, it will fit but the point will simply stick out. By the way, I have other knife sheaths and these are the best by far!
