Merra Syal has written a lovely book to read. This book about childhood is at times earthy, at times very funny, and occasionally made feel really quite sad. Childhood is seen here as a time of exploration, learning about the world and learning about yourself over time. I loved the family portrait that she painted and the peek inside the home of family with a history and culture very different from my own. It told me things I didn't now about the horrors that immigrants experienced before arriving in 'great Britain', and left me feeling full admiration for these gentle parents who navigated their way into being a valued part of tough Northern community. It did not remind me of my childhood although I do remember being forced to wear frilly dresses prior to being able to voice my objections much to my own mothers horror. This story reminded me of how deeply children think, work things out, and make sense of what's going on around them. It did trigger memories of my own thoughts and thinking as a child which also made me smile (I was more right than I realised!). I loved reading this book and also the thinking that it prompted.

Die Geschichte von Meena hat mich gleich in ihren Bann gezogen. Sie beobachtet das alltägliche Leben sehr hellsichtig und behandelt Themen, die wohl alle Menschen in ihrer Jugend bewegt haben. Sehr empfehlenswert!

The novel has a major focus on the diasporic identity of an Indian family in the mining village of Tillington and how the main protagonist internally struggles with herself to establish a sense of acceptance and identity within herself. If you want to read a good diasporic novel, go for it.
