'Make It Sensational - Advanced Belly Dance Drum Solo' instructional program by Oriental Dance star Katalin Schäfer invites you to give the traditionally improvisational genre of belly dance drum solo a theatrical look and a sharp contemporary feel in order to make it a high point of stage shows before modern Western audiences. Katalin combines percussive hip work, shimmies, and the traveling steps used in a classic belly dance drum solo with elements of modern dance and jazz to make these steps sparkle in a new way. 'A technically polished performance is impressive,' says Katalin, 'but you want to give your audience even more. You want to create a unique character and tell a story, because that s what gives a dance performance that star-like quality that is so memorable.' Spicing up classic belly dance with new twists on familiar moves, Katalin teaches 3 drum solo choreographies step-by-step. Each one has its own flavor and mood. Katalin explores the story-telling potential of percussive music and pays attention to expressive body language that makes your audience feel involved. Katalin: 'To find our own unique style of dance and own it, we need to cultivate the freedom and curiosity to step outside the box of tradition and be bold in exploring new trends. I am looking forward to sharing my work with you!'

Not perfect but has some good material
This DVD is quite simple and short at only 45 minutes but it is packed with dancing and contains three "mini" choreographies. Each choreography has about 4-6 combinations and they use various styles. The DVD is advertised as advanced instruction and I would agree largely because she spends so little time on step by step instruction. You should have a solid understanding of belly dance moves including various circles, shimmies, pops and locks and how to dance safely before attempting this DVD. She assumes you already know these moves and does not break them down for you. (She also uses a range of french terminology for dancing.)The format of the DVD goes like this:-"Welcome" This introduction is the same as the trailer you can find on youtube.-Performance of Drum Solo #1-Practice of Drum Solo #1 - this is another performance of the same solo but now you still see numbers on the screen telling you which combination you're watching and the camera doesn't change angles so it's easier to follow.-"Step by Step Instruction" - she walks through the steps in each combinations and every combination is followed once by a clip of that combination in the choreography with the music. She does not break down the steps - just talks you through them as she does them. This format is repeated with the other two drum solos. There is no warm up, cool down, drilling of any kind or talk about dance theory. I was somewhat surprised and disappointed that she did not expound at all on the concepts mentioned in the trailer such as expression, creative process, story telling and incorporating contemporary movements from other styles. You just watch her do it and try to keep up.There are some fun dance steps and combinations on here that I would like to incorporate into my own dancing. I like the DVD but I do prefer DVDs that drill the combinations more so I don't have to rewind so much to practice.Video Quality:The sound and camera work was a tad clumsy at times (for example some of the camera transitions are rather abrupt and at one point you can hear a siren in the video) but this did not bother me. The lighting was fine, the background was interesting and her whole body is clearly visible. However, there is no mirror or switching the view so that you can mirror her movements. In a way this made me feel less obligated to copy her so I was more free to make the combinations my own. On the other hand, it's always a little more confusing to follow along when you constantly have to remember to switch to match her.I bought my copy on sale and despite the cons I think it was as good bargain.

Fun
Very fun routines. More like burlesque dancing. Not for beginners though.
