14 7/8” wide and 9 13/16” top to bottom inside work area only...

Will my wrist strap & mat still be grounded if its plugged into a 5 plug surge protector? Or is it required to plug the ground directly into the wall?

So long as the outlet that your surge protector is indeed grounded and your surge protector has the "round ground terminal affixed to the male end of the cable, that ground will be transferred through all 5 female receptacles and should be safe for sensitive electronic components.
