Q: is there an API available to get data?

There will likely never be a public API for these devices. Due to the fact the Moen has a subscription model in place for access to all functions. For them to release a public API would defeat their overall disappointing business model with this device. Great novel device, i love the idea, don't get me wrong, this whole subscription model is going to burn out consumers sooner rather than later With the moen ecosystem being locked down the way it is, future support for the device has me concerned. these types of valves are usually in a house for 30 years before being replaced. I do not see Moen keeping digital support for a 300 - 500 dollars niche valve supported for that long.

Q: Why are separate detectors needed with flo? I thought flo would detect a leak from the water main and shut off?

It does; the extra sensors are optional and simply add an additional layer of detection. They also could detect a leak faster and shut off water immediately as they don't have to reply on an analysis of the overall water system; if it's wet, it's a leak and will tell flo to shut off water.

Be warned - It is a consumable with 1-2 year life

It is a great product and one I’ve loved… till it died. The problem Moen don’t tell you about is the flow is measured by a sensitive turbine with 2 magnets. These are exposed to water continuously and get corroded / covered in magnetic debris. Once that happens, the Flo stops working. You can potentially clean it - it is a hassle - you need to disconnect mains, then clean and reinstall. The catch is, in my case that didn’t help either. Now I’m trying to get a replacement turbine - if I can’t get that, I basically now have a wifi enable valve with no leak / pipe burst protection. Not what I’d paid for!
