why is this sold as a 50 pack?

Will this work on the PowerProbe 3??

Yes it will. I have a PP3 and it works perfectly.

Has anyone bought one that didn't work? Mine doesn't.

Ensure you have the Power Probe Adapter fully plugged into the PP and ensure the GROUND wire from the PP is firmly connected to the PPAdapter's METAL TAB on the side of the adapter. Then apply your +12VDC by pressing the PP [+] button. You should see +5VDC at the tip. I sold about 150 of these and never had one come back. Good Luck!
