How do they attach to the backpack?

There are adapters that allow you to attach it where ever it fits best for you. Once you see them they are very easy to understand and use. Took me less that 5 minutes to get them on and adjusted to fit me.

How long are the straps?

They can be adjusted to be quite long. I am not a svelte person and after adjustment, I have plenty of lenth going unused.

Can this work for as a strap extender for a 1 3/4 or 1.75 strap?

i don't think these straps are designed as extensions they are male and female.

How long are they? The description says 16". Is that total, or per side? The existing answer says "as long as you need", which isn't very helpful.

These Belts are Adjustable to say as long as you need is not an answer I have a 36 inch waist and i had no problem with these straps fitting me. I hope this helps
