Can this connect my macbook pro to a cassette recorder?.....and if it does not does anyone know what cable would?

It depends on what your purpose would be with the cassette recorder. If you're trying to record from the computer to a cassette, it won't work because the recorder uses the headphone jack as an audio out port. If you are trying to get audio to the mac from the cassette recorder, it will work (in theory) because this cord allows microphone input/

How wide is the plug/shielding? My headset's jack is recessed, so the plug has to be 5.8mm or narrower. Will this fit?

To tell you the truth, I really don't know if the plug will fit your unit, but I can tell you what I did in a similar situation. I had a wire plug cable that the plug housing/insulation was to thick to fit in the speaker so the plug didn't reach the plug input. What I did is with a fine blade I trimmed some of the rubber insulation, being careful by trimming at the most minimum of the rubber insulation and check if it fits often. You can also use piece of sandpaper and simply sand a little of the rubber insulation. If you're getting the same plug that I purchased, it has the rubber insulation which is fairly thin and isn't thick, like other plugs I've had or seen, so I would say in my opinion the plug will work with the unit you have, it's not too thick it's the thinner size plug...
