Punk Rock: An Oral History

A Great book about a great time when youth was going to change the world and had some think to shout about.

まずは576ページものペーパーバックスで聖書のように分厚い１冊です。私は通勤の電車で完読しましたが、まわりの人は「こいつは一体何を読んでいるのだ？」と思っていたに違いありません。タイトルの通りたくさんの元・現役パンクミュージシャンやパンク関係者の「しゃべり」で構成された本です。John Lydon, Mick Jones, Captain Sensible, Jimmy Purseyといった大物を含め総勢112名の声が満載です。50年代、60年代のパンクのルーツ時代から、New Waveと移り変わっていった80年代初期にかけてその時代時代でのミュージシャンの声が記されています。のべ112名のミュージシャンは何度も繰り返し登場します。例えば75-76年にSex Pistolsが、世間に知られ始めたあたりはJohn Lydon, Glen Matlock, Steve Jonesなんかは何度も登場します。576ページといっても小説のように話がずーっと続いているわけではなく、一人当たりのしゃべりが長くても半ページから１ページで、そういった具合での576ページですので、途中で英語に詰まっても、話がおもしろくなくても、すぐ次に移れます。自分の興味のあるミュージシャンのしゃべりだけを読んでもいいかと思います。

This book is brilliant, Punk - as it happened, by the people that made it happen. I've discovered a lot of new (old!?) music because of this book. Some brilliant tales from Captain Sensible, Mick Jones, Ari Up and, of course, John Lydon. Well worth a read, especially by anyone with an interest in Punk, and those who think they know what it was/is all about.

It doesn't get any more detailed and well reported than this book, a great insight into the story of Punk Rock

This is a great book. If you like punk rock or would like to know more about it, this is an excellent read.
