Not to be confused with the mainstream and widely distributed Bon Ami Powder Cleanser, Bon Ami still makes its 1886 formula, originally sold in a bar, but now in powder form. The easy-to-shake can contains gentle feldspar abrasive for polishing and soap for cleaning all hard surfaces. Use to defog windows and mirrors. This is the only Bon Ami powder that is recommended for use on glass and auto glass*. NASA even used Cleaning Powder to clean the windows on Skylab. Many allergists recommend original Bon Ami because the natural ingredients contain no detergent, bleach, perfume, or dye. *(Only for use on auto glass that is 100% glass, such as found on older automobiles- without polymer additives or added plastics that could be clouded by abrasion). Review: My favorite product for cleaning windows - I bought this product to make homemade Bon Ami bars like the ones my mother used to use to clean windows. To this day, I have found nothing that works better for removing tough mineral stains. I mixed the powder with water until it formed a thick paste. Then I placed it into a bar soap box and let it dry completely. To use it, take a damp cloth or sponge and rub it on the Bon Ami cake to absorb some of the product and then swirl it on the window. After it has dried, take a clean cloth and buff the window until clear. This takes a little elbow grease, but the results are worth it. Review: fantastic, under-rated cleanser - This stuff has just enough abrasiveness to cut the crud that dish soap can't -- but not enough to damage the finish of even high-polish stainless pots and pans. And of course, it does this without a lot of harsh chemicals or bleach. Sadly, I haven't been able to find this in stores in my area reliably, so I order it here.

Comparison between 1886 and regular formula
Iโve used both the 1886 formula and regular formula Bon Ami and I think both are great. I have used them to clean porcelain dishes, steel cookware, bath tile, grout, and fibreglass, plastic and stainless steel sinks. A little bit goes a long way. It is particularly effective at getting rid of stains on porcelain, where normal dish soap doesnโt do anything. In my experience, the regular formula is slightly better than the 1886 formula, for two reasons: 1. The 1886 formula seems to clump together and stick to the surfaces of things more, instead of rinsing easily. With the 1886 formula, I find myself needing to scrub while rinsing, which I never had to do with the regular formula. 2. The 1886 formula includes tallow soap, which comes from animal fat, where the regular formula contains no animal products.

Non-scratching abrasive cleaner
I'm over 60, so I know most people will not know about this product. If you are one who is mindful not to be utilizing harsh chemicals and chlorine to clean things, this is your trick. I use it on burnt-on foods on my pots/pans, my stainless sink, clearing rust stains from any hard surface, etc. It has been my favorite 'go-to' cleaner for over 40 years. There is a reason they still sell the product ... it works. And it's 'safe on the environment' for those who look for that characteristic.

Clean glass without chemicals
I avoided cleaning my toaster oven glass door for ages and thought it would simply never be clean again. About five minutes of this product, with a microfiber cleaning cloth and a final wipe with a flour sack towel and the door is crystal clear. I can't wait to do my big oven door with it! Why isn't this product for sale everywhere?? So glad I could get it here. Now just wondering what else I had consigned to a life of grime that I can use excellent Bon Ami 1886 Formula on????
