NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING SERIES • This haunting novel reveals the dark ambition of one of Disney’s most cunning villains: Ursula, the sea witch. Hate. Her magic was infused with it. And in that hate was a deep, penetrating sorrow… The tale of the sea king's daughter Ariel is a beloved one of losing―and then finding―one's own voice. The story has been told many times and in many ways. But always the mergirl wants more than her world can offer, and her father demands that she live within the confines of his domain. Her rebelliousness costs the little mermaid her voice and nearly her soul. But the power of good prevails, and Ariel emerges proud and unchanged. And yet this is only half the story. So what of Ariel's nemesis, Ursula, the sea witch? What led to her becoming so twisted, scorned, and filled with hatred? Many tales have tried to explain her motives. Here is one account of what might have shaped the sea witch into a detestable and poor unfortunate soul. Review: Another Shocking Read! - Wonder of wonders, I read TWO books in ONE day!! Since I had previously read The Beast Within, the second book in Serena Valentino's Disney Villains series, I moved straight onto Poor Unfortunate Soul, which, as you can see, is Ursula's story. Hers was quite an interesting one too, I'll give you that! What I am finding myself loving about this series is seeing the movie play out in a way, yet we're seeing what's happening on the villain's point of view! In Fairest of All, we were following the Queen before she turned evil and wicked. This time we are with Ursula learning what cause her to turn to her path of evil and I must say it was pretty distressing. Hers was a sad tale like that of the Queen's. This series is definitely making one feel sympathy for these classic Disney villains. The odd sisters have come to Ursula because they want her help in finding their sister, Circe, who we previously met in The Beast Within. She has since gone missing and the sisters desperately want their youngest sister to come back to them. So they agree to help Ursula in destroying Triton so that she may be the only ruler of the sea. I found that this time there was a lot of reflecting back on the last story, which was the first one I read a few years ago, so naturally my memory wasn't so hot. We see Tulip, the young girl who was going to marry the Prince before his untimely transformation into a literal beast. Tulip wasn't doing so well with from the rejection of the Prince. And we learn she had unwittingly made a deal with Ursula that will greatly effect life as she knows it. I'm beginning to realize that these odd sisters are having their own story happening and it's building with each of these books. I'm definitely eager to get to this year's release given its Odd Sisters title! Alas, I've two more villains to read about before that and I am pretty excited to read about Maleficent and Mother Gothel! Maleficent has been mentioned several times now in these two (and like the second and thus making three) books and I am really interested in reading what her story will be like and what the odd sisters will do next given the events of this last one. This Disney Villains series is definitely one a Disney fan should not be without! It's a fun and magical series that is taking the stories we love and know by heart and showing us a different angle and letting us in on a whole new story that was always happening behind the scenes! Overall Rating 5/5 stars Review: Wonderful - I've been thoroughly enjoying this book series, having read "The Evil Queen," "The Beast Within," and now "Poor Unfortunate Soul." The stories are always entertaining and delightful. This one stood out because it felt fresh and unique, offering multiple storylines instead of solely focusing on Ursula. Despite this, it kept me captivated and was a fantastic read. The book seamlessly intertwines three storylines, all contributing to the overall narrative. It seems to be the shortest one I've read so far, which made me anticipate a distinctive experience. Overall, it's a wonderful story and a pleasure to read as always, but don't expect the whole book to center on Ursula. While a good portion focuses on her, much of it explores other events as well.

Triton Sucks
Better than The Beast Within, which is definitely the worst of the series so far. I'm getting a little annoyed with Princess Tulip freakin' Morningstar interrupting the story. I absolutely see no reason for her to be in these books. I can understand why Circe and Nanny are in the books if the odd sisters are so important to the stories of the villains we all hate or love. (Team Maleficent, right here). I guess I don't mind the odd sisters, as they help connect all of our Disney characters. I enjoyed the Ursula and Triton backstory, and it deepened my dislike of Triton. I've always theorized that perhaps Ursula maybe didn't fully deserve to be banished from Triton's kingdom. This book gave Ursula a sympathetic backstory much like Fairest of All did for Snow White's stepmother. One question that's been wracking my mind and I can't find the answer to: who the hell is the Romanian witch with a lyrical name? I can't figure this one out. She was mentioned twice, but not by name. All in all, I enjoyed this book, definitely much more than The Beast Within. Not as much as Fairest of All. I now understand Mistress of All Evil (which I read before The Beast Within and Poor Unfortunate Soul not realizing these books should be read in order). I'll continue with the rest of the series, even if my three favorite villains stories have already been told. I'm very interested to see what Serena Valentino does with Cinderella's stepmother and stepsisters.

Well, it's a book alright
Ok, I bought this because I do love a good Disney villain - and enjoy a clever story .... well, hmmmm ... in my opinion, it's just ok. It seems forced. I like the sea witch but kind of felt let down by this back story. Too many other characters which we are supposed to know and believe that they all have been interacting with each other for years. You may love it .... find it wonderful ... I found it hard to finish and disappointing.

Dissapointment
If you wanted a story about Ursula, this ain't it. It's all about a princess named Tulip. Ursula maybe takes up a quarter of the book. It was for me a dissapointment. Maybe the series in a whole is worthwhile but not if you are like me and wanted a full book about our sassy villain.
