This is an awesomely built sheath! It fits my ESSE 5 perfectly!! Only thing I would change is to make it the shape of the knife towards the tip. It would reduce weight and look a little sleeker. But still a really nice sheath nonetheless. Looking forward to bushcraft camp this year with my new knife and sheath. Thank you for the hand written note too. That’s a nice touch!

First off, let's be clear: This is a really nice leather sheath with a lot going for it. The maker used sturdy cuts of top grain leather and everything is well put together. I bought it for the ESEE 5 which fits well inside. Unfortunately, not perfect as the knife rattles a bit and MUST be secured with the snap. But with the snap, it is a good fit. From a basic utility point of view, and from a look & feel point of view, its close to a 5-star sheath. My copy had some minor tool marks which shouldn't be there on a sheath at this price. However, there are two issues that some will care about. If you're a casual user/wearer, skip this part. If you've got a couple sheath knives and are picky about your kit, read on. The first issue is the layered approach to construction. The firestarter kit and vertical belt loop are attached with chicago screws which gives flexibility to remove if you like, but adds a bit of bulk. I'd prefer a model with and without the firestarter so the 'with' model is better integrated (ie less layers of leather and slimmer). But my main issue is the retention strap is a total tack-on with a snap on both ends. It REALLY should be an integrated tongue from the bottom of the body leather so there is only one snap on top. That 2nd, bottom, snap adds way too much bulk and makes it awkward to wear this sheath horizontally. Further, since the body loops are fixed, if you take off the vertical belt loop and the firestarter, you end up with a good bit of slack in the loops making the sheath loose on all but very wide belts (again, mounted horizontally). Since horizontal is the use I wanted, this is all a bit of a disappointment for me. Others may not care at all. Attached pictures show the ESSEE 5 + sheath reconfigured for horizontal carry and a bit more streamlined look. As you can see from the pictures, this is a very nice sheath and will be useful for many years. Take a close look if you intend to wear it horizontal, but I expect you'll still buy it because its definitely one of the nicest I've found for this knife. Update: After working with this sheath for a month, it seems more obvious to me the layered design choices are to support configuration options: primarily left/right hand access but also with/without firestarter, with/without belt loop, etc. I expect part of the logic is "right hand" hip access requires opposite rigging from "right hand" belt access (ie: horizontal). I get the design dilemma but options add complexity and this *really nice sheath* would be twice as nice if it was simpler, and thus, thinner / lower profile. I ended up taking everything off except the snaps to grip the handle. (this includes unstitching the two horizontal loops.) Then drilled two holes in the solid bottom edge and added two inside-the-belt clips. NOW I have a high quality yet very low profile horizontal belt sheath for my ESEE 5. Its not perfect as the clips attach to the belt upside down (haven't had trouble yet -- just choose the right clip profile for your belt rig) and there's still the double snap on the handle strap. But its damn close.

Awesome product!! Looks great. Appears to be very heavy duty item and will likely handle my rough use of product. I tend to be hard on everything. Can be used to carry knife left or right handed in both vertical and horizontal positions, with or without the fire steel. I've seen many sheaths of worse quality and lesser versatility for hundreds more. You can be sure, I will buy more of his sheaths. Already eyeing my next purchase from him. I'm already showing it off and recommending this mans products to my friends.

I am a big fan of Mr. Thomas’ sheaths and have bought several, including two of these. I agree they are great quality, though I’m not an expert. I really like them. Nice thick leather, and durable I’m sure. My disappointment is that both of these particular model that I received did not have the Carl Thomas logo embossed on them anywhere. Other of his sheaths that I’ve bought did. And the pictures I see here all have it. Not sure why mine don’t. That was a big disappointment for me. Have others received them without the logo?

Thank you Carl! This is one beautiful piece of craftsmanship. It fits my RAT-5 like a glove. I love that it can be adjusted to left or right side carry or vertical or horizontal. The leather is heavy duty but still flexible (NOT all dry and crunchy). I have already ordered a cross draw sheath from Carl for my RAT-3 can’t wait to get it.
