Saves wear and tear on your poor hands.
Saves wear and tear on your poor hands. Makes clearing out dead cable very easy and time efficient. I use the product to clear out old video and audio cabling at my job site. Before I bought this item i was having issues with my hands because i had to cut cables 1 at a time and after hundreds of cables, Well enough said. This cutter has made me more productive and less in pain. I have now cut thousands of cables with it and it is still going strong.

Great quality
I bought these Jul 23, 2018, and they've been in regular use for a hair past 3 years. I do a lot of service changes, typically 150 and 200 amp most of the time. As such I deal with a lot of 2/0 SE and 4/0 SE cable. This thing never gives me any trouble cutting. I know it isn't meant to cut the whole cable, rated for individual conductors but the bit pair just shy of $140 has no trouble. It does start to be a bit more of a chore doing 4/0 SER for a 200A subpanel, but that is a thick 4 conductor cable. I've used the release function just fine, I feel those reviewers who said it didn't work didn't quite understand how to do it right. It is a bit counter intuitive, but admittedly its a feature I don't use often. My one gripe about this product is the locking lever. I feel like it would have been so much better if it had a screw and nylon locknut so I can tighten the tension on it. The problem I run into is as I'm cutting I always end up in a position where gravity swings the lever down and "locks" them in the closed position. It's an annoyance, but for the price point very tolerable. I've always planned to drill out the rivet at install it the way I envision it should be, but I just haven't gotten around to it. That's really my only complaint about the tool, overall it has been solid. I had a cheap Chinese red pair ordered on Amazon for $30 or $40, it'd eventually became a Frankenstein case of 3 versions of itself from me and coworkers making a good pair and it barely scrimped by. This Southwire tool stands up to abuse where other cheaper ones do not. I intentionally do not want the Klein version as their quality seems to continue to go downhill while their price stays the same or increases. You can only live on a once great reputation for so long. I came here to buy the smaller version to replace my old cheap red pair I mentioned that got tossed and noticed I hadn't reviewed this fantastic cutter.

Not Really That Impressed...
I almost gave it a 3 but since it does cut and has an overall very good build quality, a 4 it is.. First off I was disappointed it was Made in China...Southwire used to be known for Made in USA tools and I suppose some still are, kind of like Klein...The cutters are not sharp...I have purchased two pair and one was definitely better than the other which is another reason for the 4 rating and not a 3...Plus the overall build quality really is very good...Trouble is both the cutting edges on both pair were not smooth and I mean rough...Should be smooth like a new pair of dikes where the edge is smooth yet sharp enough to cut even paper...Smooth like when you run a fingernail along the edge it's just smooth...If this were my only pair of ratcheting cutters I might have thought these cutting edges were normal...But I own a pair of cutters from a brand with a first letter of (i) that are so smooth and sharp and they out cut these from Southwire by a wide margin actually..The worst pair from Southwire always leave strands wedged between the cutters when cutting #1 welding cable. which is the only large cable I have...The (i) brand always cut them clean every time...Plus the Southwire units had around a .004 gap between the cutters when new...Enough to feel the slop and certainly enough to affect the cutting efficiency...The (i) brand always cut clean, with no gap, plus they cost a third as much... I wanted to give these a 5, being Southwire is an American company...But with the rough blades and gaps between the blades I just couldn't...Sure I tightened the blade bolt a tad to remove the gap, but they should come tight like the much cheaper (i) brand from China as well...The rough cutting edges will surely lessen the overall cutting longevity of these cutters...Maybe the blade hardness will suffice and I can always sharpen with diamond sharpeners...Plus the cheap black paint on the surface is just CHEAP...Why not the baked powdered black finish that doesn't just rub off...Wait, I'm almost talking myself into a 3 rating so I better stop...

So far so good
Worked great until my helper that day decided not to listen to me and tried to cut a steel cable. I need blades to replace them. I came back to helper within minutes and ' they were like that" was his response. I've only had them a few weeks. Just buy em
Phenomenal cutters for the money. Most of these cutters are $300-$500 and I believe these to be of the same quality.

Personally, I think these cutters are absolutely capable and likely everything the average, professional, electrician needs; I've no complaints so far. I'm an industrial electrician, for me having ratchet cutters is essential, I don't want to be lugging a sawzall up and down stairs while cutting cable off of reels and spudding in MCC/PLC cabinets. I've owned four hundred dollar Knipex cutters, to me, I feel that the Southwire cutters are every bit as good...for half the price; the same goes for the Greenlee options. It's like this, let's be real, even IF the top-tier brands (if we can call them such) last a lot longer, will you actually get to extract the life out of them? Or will you be like me - have your tools there's three times in a year? Straight up, I refuse to pay more than $200 for cutters anymore, there's no need for them to be so expensive...and thefting is out of control; luckily, Southwire is offering the right tool for a much better price (honestly, $100 would be enough to pay for any cutters). Aaaaanyway, yes, buy these cutters, they're absolutely capable and as advertised; quality appearance and feel, smooth action, easy release mechanism, clean cut.
