This is the second of a planned series of albums of dance music from the 18th and 19th century called 'The Dance Master's Companion'. This project is supported by the Early Dance Circle and the not-for-profit company RegencyDances.org on whose website you can find the figures of the dances together with animations and illustrations of the steps. These tunes have been recorded for authentic period dancing: taken from original manuscripts, recorded on period instruments, and test-danced by experienced dancers. The country dances were the popular dances, with tunes often drawn from popular songs or arias from comic opera, equally sought after in the Assembly Rooms of the provinces and the grand Balls of the gentry.
