Wisdom Panel Breed Discovery Dog DNA Testing Kit - Most Accurate Dog Breed Identification - Test for 430+ Breeds, MDR1 Health Test, Ancestry, Relatives

For 11 years I've wondered what my beautiful black rescue dog might be, and now, thanks to Wisdom Panel 3.0, I finally I know! Most people think he looks like a wolf, but there are obvious non-wolf characteristics, like straight back legs, a curled tail, and a GSD-like personality. ("I'm the Dog, and I'm here to help!") There are several breeds I've suspected in his lineage, but before getting the test results, I forced myself to pick the four I thought were most likely. When the test results arrived, I knew they were right on, because Wisdom Panel found the same four breeds I'd predicted: Chow, Malamute, German Shepherd, and Gray Wolf. The family tree was arranged in a very plausible way that made perfect sense. I didn't know the test can identify the type of wolf, so I was extra-pleased to see that they were able to tell me that his great-grandparent was specifically a Gray Wolf. Their weight prediction was accurate, with his adult weight of 77 lbs falling right in the middle of their range. The kit is easy to use, and the directions are clearly written. Sample collection requires sticking a small round soft bristled brush inside the mouth, rotating it for 15 seconds against the cheek. This must be done twice, with each of two brushes provided. It's probably not an issue for most dogs, but my dog has never been too keen on me sticking stuff in his mouth (no tooth brushing for him), and he's not the type to be forced into anything. (Maybe that's a Chow-Malamute-Wolf thing.) The first two swabs went flying across the room, getting thoroughly contaminated. I contacted customer service, and they were friendly and helpful. They sent me four more brushes and some suggestions on how to get him to accept them. I used one as a training swab, gently brushing him around the mouth and lips with it daily for a few weeks. After much praise and lots of treats, he relaxed and started to enjoy it. One day I broke open two fresh swabs and got the samples without him batting an eye. The mailer is postage paid, so I just dropped it in a mailbox and waited for results online. Results were ready about 2 1/2 weeks from the time they received the samples. I am extremely pleased with the Wisdom Panel 3.0, and look forward to testing my other dog!

We adopted our puppy from a rescue organization that had no idea what breed mix she was. Everyone had their guesses so we decided to buy a doggie DNA test. Our vet recommended this brand and another one for most accurate results. Instructions are incredibly easy and the swab process was quick. Just send the swabs back in their prepackaged mailer. Can’t wait to get our results in a few weeks and see if we were close on breed guesses. I’ll update after we get them back to see if the price is worth the results! Purely based on ease of use, I’d recommend. *Update* we got the results and are thrilled! While they weren’t exactly what we were expecting (surprise!), they make complete sense with her size and looks. I’m confident the results are accurate. It helps us know what type of exercise she likes/needs and how to manage her diet/exercise going forward. I’m so happy we bought this! Still 100% recommend.

This was my first genealogy dog kit, and it won't be the last! This product was extremely simple to use, and I love that the package came included with postage- I was relieved I didn't have to buy additional stamps or a box to mail this back to the company for testing. I tested the kit on two dogs- our senior dog, which we knew her breed already, but the other dog was a stray puppy we rescued that had been abandoned. I tested both dogs in order to prove the company's accuracy much to the chagrin of my wallet. The test that came back for our senior dog confirmed what we knew about her breed already, but we were thrilled to learn that the website also featured nearby relatives. We had a fun time analyzing our senior dogs' cousins, siblings, etc from the next town over. The test for the puppy proved helped in identifying what breed she was, too (pit bull mix; she had 19 different dog breeds in her DNA). We were able to take her to an animal rescue that was familiar with pit bull temperaments and training. She got adopted, and her new owner was thrilled to have a copy of her Wisdom Panel DNA results- especially to show the pups' new vet. Thank you Wisdom Panel! What a great product.

(Note: This is worth what you spend on it, truly, but the price goes up and down. We got it at $56 via a flash sale, and the price then went to the 70's. It went back down a few weeks later to the $50's, and now it's up to 80. This is in the space of less than 6 weeks. Keep an eye on the price or use a site that alerts you when the price here drops. No matter what, this is definitely worth it!) Best Christmas gift I've ever given, hands-down. We adopted Rose from a wonderful rescue organization in September 2015. She was supposedly half-Chihuahua and half something else, most likely miniature pinscher. Well... my sweet girl whom my (wonderful) vet said would likely average 9-12 pounds has grown to a svelte 22 pounds. Of course, he didn't know exactly what her parentage was, and neither did we. I got this for my husband for Christmas (Rose is his baby). The timeline was: Mailed 12/24/16, Email from Wisdom Panel showing receipt on 12/28/16, and we received an email saying the results report was ready on 1/12/17, which is 2 weeks and 1 day from receipt. We easily logged back in to the site (you register when you send the sample) and viewed the report. Congratulations! Rose is a Shetland Sheepdog, Miniature Pinscher mix. (OMG!) The report was easily downloaded to a pdf which was 10 pages long, and included the following sections (as of January 13, 2017): (1) Key Breeds Detected – a genealogy chart which shows great grandparents, grandparents, and parents); (2) Key Breed History, Appearance and Behavior (one section for each key breed detected; in our case we had two), which tells you things like height, weight, ear, muzzle and tail characteristics, roots (e.g., the Sheltie has its roots in the Shetland Islands off the coast of Scotland), coat type and colors, markings and traits; (3) Ours had a Mixed Breed Ancestry section, since this was part of Rose's DNA makeup. It included information such as the groups within the mixed breeds (in our case, her mixed-breed ancestry was made up of the Terrier Group, Companion Group, Sporting Group and Hound Group. There's a bar chart showing how much of each group makes up her Mixed Breed ancestry. Each group within this section has information like the type of dogs that make up the group, what they were initially bred for, traits, etc.) (4) MDR1 (Multi-Drug Resistance-1) screening - this DNA test tests for the MDR1 genetic mutation, which can mean a dog is more sensitive to certain drugs. (There’s more information on this on the site.) Ours showed the Rose does not have the mutation, and isn't at increased risk for experiencing side effects from drugs that are pumped by P-glycoprotein.); (5) How Key Physical Traits Are Inherited - shows the influence of breeds on a dog's appearance; (6) Additional Information - includes the following sections: (a) Predicted Adult Weight Profile, (b) Talk to Your Veterinarian (show them the genetic results, esp. if there's an MDR1 issue), (c) How Wisdom Panel Works, and (d) A $15 off coupon to purchase an additional kit for you or friends/family (7) A Statement of Authentication certificate, which includes the names of you and your dog, the date of the test results, a genealogy chart showing great-grandparents through parents, and note certifying the authenticity of your dog's canine genetic background as determined following the analysis of the genetic markers. Again, The PDF can be easily downloaded and printed. I am VERY happy with the price, delivery, ease of gathering the sample (two cheek swabs; very easy and quick), and the timeline until we received the results. I've already ordered another test (we have two dogs) and would highly recommend it to anyone.

The sample was very easy to collect, but I definitely recommend reading the instructions first. The only downside for me was how long it took to get the results—it was over a month, which was longer than I would have liked. Overall, though, I’m very happy with the test and feel like the results were accurate. My dog is a Belgian Malamaw mix, and the results came back with American Terrier, Shepherd, and Malamute, which all made sense to me. If I ever end up with another dog and want to know their breed mix, I would definitely purchase this test again. I’d give this one 4 stars because you were happy with the accuracy and would repurchase it, but the month-plus wait was a drawback. For the Amazon title, I’d use “Easy to Use and Results Seemed Accurate”. It has been long established that my rescue (got him at 14 weeks) is a Flat Coated Retriever (mostly). Vets, groomers, other Flattie owners blurt it out unprompted. But there is something else in him so I got this test. Imagine my surprise when the results came back as: American Staffordshire Terrier / Chow Chow / Cocker Spaniel / Labrador Retriever / Siberian Husky Mix! Huh? They may as well have said my dog was a cat! Where was the Flat Coated Retriever dna? Not even a molecule? This couldn't be right. For one brief moment I actually stopped loving him! My boy was a Pit Bull? (No offense to Pittie owners intended - they are sweet dogs just not my preference). I wondered if the results had been accidentally sent to the wrong owner and if there was a Pittie owner out there equally mystified at being told he owned a Flat Coated Retriever (mostly) Taking the scientific approach I repeated the test, this time with a similar company in Canada (to ensure the same lab was not used). This company's results: Bulldog / Cocker Spaniel / Norwegian Elkhound / American Staffordshire Terrier! What?? Could my darling boy actually be a unique Cocker Spaniel / Staffie mix that looks remarkably like a Flattie? Well, according to the rescue group the others in his litter looked just like him, so this scenario was unlikely. Also, his personality is that of a Flat Coated Retriever - he taught ME how to play fetch, he loves loves loves to swim, carries his soft toys everywhere with his soft mouth, watches the ducks as they fly across the sky. All the traits of a Flat Coated Retriever - bred to be a great gun dog. These tests supposedly have a margin error of 10% but I think that's a bit conservative. I gave the Wisdom Panel 3 stars because it is equally inaccurate as its peers. Apparently the only definitive test is a blood test. Well I've spent enough on this nonsense and I am content to establish (with the experienced eye of a long-time dog person) that my boy is a Flat Coated Retriever (mostly). Beauty, as they say, is in the eye of the beholder! ***Update 11/30/16**** Using my review the people at Mars located my order and following up with me directly. They asked for photos of my boy and I sent a lot! They promised to look into it and within days I had a response. The response was detailed, thoughtful and fully backed by science. My boy is definitely not a Flattie and the science proves it. The depth of their review of my boy's results was thorough. That I am willing to accept their response speaks volumes to the time and trouble they were willing to extend for one unimpressed customer. Even though I did not get the results I hoped for and expected, I am thoroughly impressed by their level of customer service and the amount of work they were willing to put into this one dog's DNA. Definitely worthy of 5 stars. Definitely recommend this company.

This is so neat! We recently adopted a puppy and we wanted to know what we adopted! Our Vet recommended this because it is a fraction of the cost of what they will charge. It appears to be accurate! And the information they provide is fun, informative and interesting! If you want to upgrade you can get more information! We are very pleased!

I knocked off a star only because I was disappointed this was not the latest kit. It is the second kit I ordered and I had no idea I was buying a version that did not match the version I bought my first dog. There is not a big difference, but it did not track traits specific to my dog not did it test for one of the health traits of the later test. That being said I was pleased with the speed of the test (right in the two week range) and the simplicity of testing. Just put the swab in the dogs mouth and quickly swab the cheek,if your quick it's over before the dog gets too irritated with it, easy peasy. My boy came back with 25% Staffordshire Terrier, 25% Chihuahua(a big surprise,but I can see it now) 12.5%Beagle, 12.5% Australian Cattle dog (we thought he was half) and 25% the dreaded mixed breed. While I wish I could drill down the other 25% I'm amazed at how far these tests have come. I remember years ago when doggy DNA tests first started popping up in veterinary offices. They were quite a bit more expensive and had a much smaller breed catalog. You were much more likely to get just the breed group. Things have come a long way since then at a very affordable price. I recommend going to the testing website and picking up the latest test 4.0 for $84 dollars, or making sure Amazon has the same price as the manufacturer. I would not buy this version (3.0) unless this test goes on sale. The current price of $76 is not enough of a savings to buy an older testing kit. Overall Wisdom Panel is a great test and Its great not having to wonder forever what your dogs breed makeup is.

Don’t buy if you are in Australia, they don’t service here. They are also impossible to contact for issues, took half a year before I got to someone, who then let me know that our efforts to post to the US were wasted as the sample was nowhere to be found, and that they don’t do this for our area. Not sure if US people or areas have a better experience but this one was not good for us. The two stars is just cause they eventually did give us our money back after much running around and emails.

We are so happy with this product. It shipped and made it to us very quickly. The directions were easy to follow although our puppy didn't enjoy it very much. The longest part was waiting for the sample to reach the laboratory (~10 days) and we got the results in less than two weeks from that!! Quicker than expected. We adopted a rescue puppy and were unsure of her breeds. The shelter said husky mix but she looks shepherd/lab. The test showed that she was all three and two more that were surprising (jindo and Lhasa apso). It was really fun reading the report and gave us good insight into what she will grow into as she is still a little 3 month old. Thanks Wisdom Panel!!

Shipping back to the lab took a bit of time, but the company is very communicative and clear about every stage of analysis. Can't wait to see the results!

Mambo was sold as a caboodle, but he looks nothing like a poodle. He is also far too big (22kg) to be a cavoodle. Wisdom Panel results came back showing that Mambo is 37.5 Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, 25% Golden Retriever, 12.5% Labrador Retriever, 12.5% Poodle and 12.5% Shih Tzu. (No picture and no information about Mambo given.) The fact that poodle was in Mambo's genes finally justified why he was tagged as a cavoodle. The strong retriever component also made sense in view of his built. Now everytime someone asks what breed is Mambo, I can give a definitive answer. Really cool product, thank you! =D

I was a little hesitant at first to buy this test. But I am glad I did. Turns out my rescue dog (MAX) is a 'Jackapoo". He is half min poodle & half jack russel terrier. When I got Max I did see his litter mate (sister) and a Jackapoo breed makes sense when I think back to her + Max. I have had Max for 4 years and never knew his true breed. I figured he was a poodle mix. I don't care what his breed is, I love him regardless. But it was super cool to find out what he really is. And also to find out why his legs are so long, why he can jump super high & why he has a terrier face / triangle ears & so on. 100% recommend. Do this. Its worth it. Results took about 2 weeks.
