Excellent knife, good sheath, poor attachment

*by A***R on Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2019*

First off, Benchmade has excellent warranty service. The knife I received had a really tight sheath (you had to use both hands and yank really hard to get it out of the sheath). When I explained the problem to Benchmade, they asked me to send it in to them. Not sure if they replaced a defective sheath or managed to adjust it? However, it came back still nicely tight, but the knife can now be withdrawn with one hand. The edges on the bare handle are a little sharp. OK for casual use, but for heavy duty cutting you'll probably either want gloves or to have the handle wrapped with Paracord. The bare handle is wonderfully flat however, so that might make it easier to carry in some circumstances.Wrapped with Paracord the handle is very comfortable. Benchmade recommends putting the knife in a vise to wrap the handle. But you can just put the knife in it's sheath and hold it between your knees if you have to. It'll be harder to get the Paracord perfectly lined up and pretty, but you can get a usable wrap without any tools. So if the Paracord gets gunked up or covered in chicken grease, it only takes a few minutes to replace it. The included Paracord was (barely) enough for me to wrap the entire handle. Now, about the notorious serrations on the spine. Visually, they do add kind of a Rambo effect to the knife. So if you're carrying the knife to the office or are otherwise trying to appear inoffensive, the serrations may be a negative. And they do get in the way of batoning and certain other uses.On the positive side, they don't take up any of the main cutting edge of the blade. Compared to the inch of serrations on most "combination" blades, the serrations are long enough to actually saw thru things. My knife didn't come with very sharp serrations (they're actually painted over), so I won't be slicing any tomatoes with them. But I also won't be shredding my clothes every time I draw the knife. I'm sure they can be sharpened, but I think I'll wait and see what I actually wind up using them for before doing that. Overall, for an urban carry knife, or even a kitchen knife, the serrations add an extra bit of occasional utility. The knife comes with a Tek-Lok. It works, sort of. The sheath has an attachment point for an elastic retention strap that limits where you can attach the Tek-Lok. Consequently the knife rides very high on your belt. But it's actually so high as to be awkward to reach. The sheath has plenty of mounting holes, so I just ditched the fancy Tek-Lok and made a belt loop out of some Paracord instead. Unlike the Tek-Lok, the Paracord doesn't rattle, doesn't stick out, doesn't block the elastic retention strap and lets the knife ride lower. It's like Benchmade designed a great knife, actually made a very good sheath for it, and then just gave up and used off-the-shelf parts to fasten the sheath to your belt. In spite of the fact that the off-the-shelf part doesn't even fit correctly. Maybe Army Rangers only attach knives to their vests and the Tek-Lok works for that? But for a normal civilian belt the Tek-Lok is a poor choice. I really wish Benchmade had used a good quality steel clip like ESEE does. That would work 100% better than the Tek-Lok.

    Parachute chord

Almost impossible to attach the chord to the handle like it appears in the picture. You need an advanced degree in chord wrapping

    Nice blade, unimpressive handle

*by D***R on Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2019*

So I really like this knife but honestly 1 day after buying it I boxed it back up and was ready to send it back to Amazon because I was really not impressed by the handle and for around $160 after tax for the black model the skeleton handle has it's usefulness I get it, there is a market for that but for that much money Benchmade sends para-cord in a bag for you to wrap the handle yourself or leave it bare metal. So here's the deal. The knife is way to thin to use without a wrapped handle, in a survival fantasy situation you use the para-cord to build a log cabin in the woods by a river and tie the knife to a stick creating a hunting spear... Yeah I get it, however while I think I did a fine job wrapping the handle and benchmade provides a decent instructional video it should come from the factory professionally wrapped give the end user the option to take the para-cord off but don't at this price point you shouldn't be expected to wrap it yourself. This and this alone was what made me almost send it back. The sheath is pretty good, I like the size and the lock up is really solid the knife isn't falling out no chance. The techlok I'm not a fan of, personally I prefer a clip I ordered a Esee 3 clip plate and the holes on it line up near perfect with the holes on this sheath so that was a cheap upgrade / fix for me. Most will love the techlok and it's great that benchmade includes one with the knife! The above rants said, the blade is awesome. Look up reviews on the knife you will be hard pressed to find any truly negative feedback on it there is a reason for that, this is a really good knife. It won't replace one of my Esee knifes for bush craft / camping however, for hiking and climbing I really like this knife, it's very capable and really much lighter than the Esee knives. The blade is one of the best looking blades I have in my collection, right up there with the legendary Infidel it makes a statement and it looks cool not only does it look good but it's very functional and like all benchmade products comes razor sharp!Would I buy it again?Yes and No. I won't be sending mine back it's grown on me and I like it so I'll keep it, I will be buying a set of custom scales for the handle the para-cord is cool but not even close to a good set of scales. I think after putting a good set of scales on the handle this knife will be near perfect in just about every way for it's intended use. It's worth the money but be aware you need to buy scales for it so factor in an extra $50-100 for that or you had better be on-point with your para-cord skills. The knife even with gloves isn't really usable without some sort of handle to grip on be it scales or para-cord.
