All-round guide to keeping one's brain active
A very good book that is more than just a puzzle book. It focuses on ways to keep your mind active and working well, whatever your age. Some of the tips and advice are basically lifestyle advice about trying new things, etc. There are also a good amount of brain-training puzzles, divided into different sections, each focusing on a different area, such as number logic, word logic, spatial awareness, etc. It's a very good read and, while it doesn't contain that many puzzles, it allows the reader to work out what kind of brain exercise might be good for them, and to then source further similar exercise/puzzles themselves. Four stars.

A really great book
I've actually bought a couple of "Brain Training" books before, even since the app for the Nintendo DS which was a kind of puzzle game was popular. This is better, much better, than any of the others I've owned before, which were puzzles, largely. This book has a number of sections which incorporate exercises, which have answers in the back before the index, also chapters with logic puzzles, math challenges, other thinking challenges and the answers in the back but it is not a collection of lateral thinking quizes, sudokos, cross words and word searches or that sort of thing. The book is divided into How The Brain Works; Brain Workout; Thinking Skills; Try New Things, the chapters are futher subdivided and it is all clearly laid out in the contents at the front. The book itself is full of infograms, is rich with pictures and illustration and has no boring walls of text written like programming or user manual instructions. I'm unsure which chapters I like the best but its between the How The Brain Works, which has some fantastic illustrations and explanations, and Try New Things. I liked the discussion of Genes Versus Lifestyle in this section but the other content about the active brain, fuelling the brain, the aging brain, the unhealthy aging brain are all great too (How the Brain Works). I also liked the range of activities described in Try New Things, honestly anyone reading up on sources like this with the time and resources to pursue any of them could not possibly claim to be bored. It has inspired me (again) to see what hobbies and pass times I can take up other than just reading. A great book though, whether you take up any new pass times or just enjoy reading about brain function and fitness.
