My decision not to buy the panels at that time was based partially on cost, but also because of doubts I had about the ability of the Jackery solar panels to cope with weather conditions in the Outer Hebrides, where I live. We have some rain here on up to 300 days a year and strong winds on almost as many. Jackery do make it clear in their advertising that the solar panels are not waterproof and looking at the foldable stands on the website pictures, I was also concerned that they might be too flimsy to remain standing in windy weather. Nevertheless, I continued to be interested in the solar panels and eventually decided to buy a pair three or four weeks ago, when they were offered at 30% discount during desertcart's most recent Prime Day. So, how have they fared? Generally, very well. I use the Jackery Explorer 1000 to provide lighting in the house during power cuts and for regular use in my polytunnel and shed, where I do not have mains electricity. It has become indispensable around the croft and house. Having these solar panels increases the flexibility of the power station, which I was previously charging just from a wall socket. The 2 solar panels arrived a couple of weeks ago and I have been getting to grips with them ever since. Straight out of the box, the panels are impressive to look at. They are sturdily made and neatly finished. They look durable and and I am fairly confident that with care, they will last a long time. The 2 solar panels connect easily to the Jackery 1000 with a dedicated connector that is supplied with the power station, not with the panels. A useful feature is that devices can be charged by plugging them directly into the usb or usb-c socket on the rear of the solar panels without the need for them to be connected to a power station. When connected to the Jackery 1000, the solar panels started to charge it immediately and it quickly became clear that the rate at which they charge is heavily affected by the intensity of light and the angle of the panels whilst charging. My initial concerns about wind and rain turned out to be realistic and several times during the first few days, I had to pick the solar panels up from the ground where the wind blew them and on other occasions, rush out to retrieve them when it started to rain. Life is too short to deal with these problems regularly, so I have now moved the panels into my polytunnel where they sit protected from the weather and where the light intensity is still sufficient to charge the Jackery power station with them at a rate only slightly slower than if they were outside in the open. I have found these solar panels to be a useful addition to the Jackery 1000 and since owning them, have learnt that you need to take a little time to learn how to use them to best effect in your own situation. They could be improved for UK use by making them completely waterproof and strengthening the leg stand, but overall, these panels greatly add to the versatility of the Jackery power station and are good bits of kit to have for stand by/ off grid/ camping use. One thing worth mentioning is that a DC8020 to DC7909 adapter is included, so it will work with older Jackery devices without issues. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Expensive and Fragile - Great in Some Circumstances *by C***R on 15 April 2025* This solar panel is good in that it works to spec, but it comes with... Issues. The primary issue is that it needs to have zero shade and can't cope with more than a tiny amount. For example - if it's put up in direct, full sunlight, pointed directly at the midday sun it will suck in 100W. If there is a narrow pole nearby casting a tiny shadow across it, this falls to 5W. I have a cheap 40W panel and in the same situation, this will give me 35W. It is fragile. Given that it is intended for travel use and to be freestanding, it should not be able to break itself under its own weight, and should be able to survive small knocks. Mine has almost lost a corner from about a 6 inch fall, while the previously mentioned 40W panel fell 8 feet without damage. This it only rigid down the sides. This means it cannot be placed portrait, and if it is placed on uneven ground, it may damage itself. So far mine hasn't had anything that didn't brush out ok, but I do worry at how raw the edges are and how long it will last. The stands on the back are a good idea, but they are very wobbly. In some situations this is helpful e.g. on uneven ground. But on smoother ground it means it slips and falls over. The lead with it is excellent, however it is incompatible with my explorer 240 v2 and requires a "DC8020 to USB-C" adapter which Jackery sells for £30. With the adapter, this pairs excellently with my 240. It will charge it to full in about 3hrs. The lead that comes with it can push out up to 27W directly to USB C and A, however this is very inefficient, so if you are pairing this with a solar generator - only use this if the generator is nearly full or standalone. All round, this is pricey, and you will want to keep in mind how much you value portability, as this makes many sacrifices for that portability while piling on the price. Update: I've been using this near constantly for over a year now and it's still going strong. It lays on my shed roof and powers a mini office / entertainment tent.
