Makita hammer drill
This is a massive step up from my lxt brushed hammer drill. The handle makes it much easier to drill 6 inch holes in a ceiling without getting thrown off a ladder.

I Thought Chuck was Frozen but it Wasn’t
At first, I thought the chuck was broken. It was solidly frozen in the fully open position. No amount of hand cranking would free it. I purchased another sample from HD, and it was exactly the same. So I watched a few videos on YouTube that provided a method for freeing up the chuck. I put the drill in first gear in the drill position, put the drill in the clockwise direction, and wrapped the chuck in a towel to save the skin on my hand. After a couple of blips on the trigger, the chuck rotated freely. I don’t know why Makita ships this drill with the chuck completely frozen open. The good news is that the chuck has no visible runout and seems to solidly grip the bits. The other good news is that I have other Makita tools that use the same battery and charger so I saved some money buying the tool only.

Great drill all around, with one annoying flaw.
After using a number of brands, (Makita, Milwaukee, DeWalt) I find this to be a very good drill overall but it has some features I don"t like. The quality, battery life, and speeds/power do overpower those negatives though and I would buy it again if I had to. My major issue, like other's I have read, is that the drill is very sensitive to its drill or hammer drill function. While drilling, and without touching the chuck it may slip into hammer mode and is very tough to move out of. The dial isn't the most accurate in that regard. All other settings it moves easily and clicks solidly though. But drill or hammer is a very delicate balance and requires some force to move in/out of. The other complaint is the handle can only be installed at a perfect 90 degrees to the drill. There is no other option. My favorite part of the dewalt version is being able to move the handle into any position, all 360 degrees. Its no the biggest issue, but can be annoying sometimes, and because of that I avoid using it at all. Besides those two complaints, amazing drill. Plenty of torque, hammer function works great, nice led light and the speeds are very user friendly.

Super excited about its power
This tool, is the best cordless Makita I’ve owned ina while , it will drive concrete lags like butter, fence building, decks, anything you throw at it, and you better be hanging on to its toll show you what torque is

Its a Makita, what do you expect?+++
Makita, my main brand. Drill works great, just used it again today with an 8" hole saw through a steel roof, 2 sheets of plywood, 3 layers of tar paper, ate it right up! had the extension arm on the drill so I didn't break my arms. Awesome drill but hell, it a Makita, what do you expect?

Something is under-engineered in this machine
This specific machine (XPH14) keeps breaking. I bought 3 of those and two of them have not more than 4hrs of use and they just stop working after a high torque application. I replaced one that gave up after 2 weeks of usage and that was replace but now the next one quit after 3 months. They get that funny electric smell and then they stop. I have battery drill Makitas with less rated torque and they are several years old, so I don't understand how such a high torque machine can break down in such a short time.

Bought to use for ice fishing with an auger attachment since my Milwaukee drill wasn’t powerful enough. For $165 compared to a $250 Milwaukee fuel, this has amazing value and probably more reliable. I went through the ice like butter with the power and torque this thing has on the drill setting. And that is with an off brand 18v 5A battery off Amazon. Can definitely do better on a proper first party battery. Caught a little guy using it. Great alternative to more expensive electric augers in my opinion and you have a tool you can use at home or work
